St. Matthew / St. John wins Lutheran hoops title

St. Matthew / St. John split a two-game series with St. Paul I but emerged the champion in the men’s division of the Lutheran Basketball Association.

St. Paul took Game One, 53-50. David Cooney led the winners with 27 points, 17 of them coming in the second half. Dan Smith added 19 points. For St. Matthew / St. John, Wes Hromowyk led with 13 points.

St. Matthew / St. John won Game Two more decisively and clinched the league championship by topping St. Paul I, 53-43. Josh Kroening led St. Matthew / St. John with 18 points, scoring 14 of them in the second half while hitting all but one of his eight foul shots.

Cooney again led St. Paul I in scoring with 16 points while Dan Smith netted 14 for the finalists. St. Matthew / St. John finished the playoffs at 4-1 and an overall record of 16-6, while St. Paul I finished the playoffs at 5-2 and 17-7 overall.
