Busy bats lift Bisons over Toledo

Niagara Gazette — A seven-run rally in the second inning was the only offense the Buffalo Bisons could produce but it was all the runs they'd need.

The host Toledo Mud Hens cut the lead with two late rallies but the Bisons held them back to win, 7-5, at Fifth Third Field in Toledo, Ohio Monday afternoon.

Luis Jiminez started the second inning rally by reaching first on a single. He was driven home on Clint Robinson's double. Ryan Goins then singled to right field, scoring Andy LaRoche and Robinson.

With Mike Nickeas singling to advance Goins, Munenori Kawasaki then hit a single to score Goins and keep himself and Nickeas on base.

After Kevin Pillar's hit loaded the bases, Anthony Gose smacked a triple that brought all three teammates home.

The rally chased starting Toledo pitcher Jon Link from the mound. His successor, Robbie Weinhardt, killed off the rally and got the Mud Hens out of the inning.

Toledo scored a run in the bottom of the second and had back-to-back two-run rallies in the seventh and eighth innings, but Buffalo's Neil Wagner shut the hosts down in the bottom of the ninth to preserve the Bisons' win and earn his 16th save of the season.

Thad Weber (5-4) got the win for Buffalo, whose recored improved to 55-53. Link (0-3) was the losing pitcher for the Mud Hens. The teams split the four game series with two wins each.

Buffalo next travels to Columbus to face the Clippers, with Tuesday night's game set to begin at 7:05 p.m.
