FC Buffalo ousted from playoffs with 5-2 loss

Niagara Gazette — FC Buffalo's first-ever postseason appearance ended Saturday evening with a disappointing 5-2 defeat by their archrivals, Erie Admirals, in the semifinal of the National Premier Soccer League's Great Lakes Conference playoffs in Detroit.

Ian Mort scored both goals for FC Buffalo, whose first goal cut a 2-0 Erie lead in half in the 57th minute.

Erie took the 1-0 lead in the 16th minute when Shane Howard, on a 2-on-1 situation, took Billy Colton's pass and put the ball past Buffalo goalkeeper Andrew Coughlin. The second goal, in the 41st minute, came in an odd play as Coughlin was tangled with an Erie player while trying to clear the ball. That left Coughlin out of position, allowing Howard to score his second goal of the match.

Following Mort's first goal, Daniel Deakin scored in the 70th minute on a free kick just outside FC Buffalo's 18-yard area. Then in the 83rd minute, Erie's Colton beat FC Buffalo's attempted offside trap and scored to build the lead to 4-1.

The Admirals struck again just one minute later. Karl Jones entered the game as a substitute and in just seconds got the ball and made it 5-1 in favor of Erie.

Mort scored his second goal in the 90th minute, a curling shot from just inside Erie's 18-yard box. All that did, though, was make an already determined match end with a slightly closer score.

Erie advances to play the hosts, Detroit City FC, for the Great Lakes Conference final Sunday at 3 p.m.
