Starpoint hosts football symposium

Niagara Gazette — Former Buffalo Bills defensive back and current radio color commentator Mark Kelso will take part in a parent symposium and youth football clinic scheduled for 6 p.m. Wednesday at Starpoint High School.

The “Parent Symposium/Player Clinic” is designed to explain the combined efforts of the NFL, USA Football and the Niagara Erie Youth Sports Association to implement USA Football “HeadsUp” protocols in youth football. It is free to all parents or guardians and their children and is aimed at players ages 6-14.

The symposium will touch on proper equipment fitting, concussion awareness, proper “HeadsUp” tackling techniques and heat preparedness and hydration. Parents will take part in informational presentations on USA Football’s objectives, while children will take part in drills designed by USA Football to teach technique. Children will also take part in skill position drills run by USA Football certified player safety coaches.

Sponsoring the event is NEYSA, a non-profit youth group formed through the combined effort of the Grand Island Jr. Vikings, Tonawanda Football Clinic, Niagara Falls Jr. Vipers, Niagara-Wheatfield Amateur Athletics, Pendleton Athletic Booster Association, Lewiston-Porter Youth Football and Wilson Jr. Lakemen.
