Area Sports: Gleason Gymnasts take first at state tourney

Niagara Gazette — The Gleason’s Gymnastics Level 3 team finished in first place at the New York State Championship held at Gymnastics Unlimited in Orchard Park last week.

Emily Fittante, a sixth-grader at Lew-Port, placed sixth overall in the Senior D division. She scored an all-around 37.5, which included 9.825 on vault, 9.35 on bars, 8.9 on beam and 9.425 on floor exercises.

Karissa Drake, a fifth-grader at 79th Street School in Niagara Falls, finished 15th overall in the Senior B division. She scored 9.675 on vault, 8.525 on bars, 8.75 on beam and 8.85 on floor exercises for an all-around score of 35.8.

BASEBALL

Midtown Majors

Marlins 9, Dodgers 5

Chris Galligano allowed just one hit while striking out 13 batters as the Praxair Marlins defeated the LaSalle Legion 1142 Dodgers, 9-5. At the plate for the Marlins, Mathias Oliver had three hits including a home run and two doubles. Jaiden Coleman and Zach Wilkenson added two hits apiece.

Dodgers pitcher Darryl Hill struck out eight batters. Travis Noworyta had a hit while Mike Iveys III made four strong defensive plays.

Midtown Minors

Astros 13, Tigers 1

Tajshawn hit two triples which drove five runs home as the Mike's Dairy Queen Astros topped the American Legion Tigers, 13-1. Josiah Oliver had five hits, including three doubles, and four RBI. Trevor Klinger had two hits including a home run and also struck out six batters in two innings pitched.

Mike Rimlin had two hits including a home run for the Tigers.

Astros 19, Dodgers 6

Trevor Klinger hit a grand slam home run to lead the Astros to a big win over the Cristoforo Colombo Dodgers. Jonathan Rehman and Deonte Wright also hit home runs for the Astros, who improved to 5-0 on the season.

Chris Stonner had three hits, including a home run, and three RBI for the Dodgers.

Royals 6, Dodgers 5

Summer Destino had two hits including a home run, while ShayWia Smith hit the game-winning RBI, scored by Andrea Graham, as the Camtech Plumbing Royals edged the Dodgers, 6-5. Matt Paonessa drove home two runs on two hits for the Dodgers, while teammate Lucas Miller had two hits including a double and an RBI.
