Henderson comes back, runs away with Women's Porter Cup

Niagara Gazette — LEWISTON — Thursday was the Jennifer Ha show at Niagara Falls Country Club.

Friday, Brooke Henderson stole it.

Henderson came within one shot of the course record, shooting a 9-under 62 on Friday to complete a nine-stroke turnaround and win the second annual Women's Porter Cup.

The 16-year-old Smith Falls, Ont. native, no. 3 in the world amateur women's rankings, shot a 75 on Wednesday before responding with a 68 on Thursday.

"I was really just trying to put a good round together and make some birdies," Henderson said of her mindset heading into the final round. "I was just trying to move up the leaderboard and see what happened."

Henderson started hot, shooting 4-under on the front nine to pull within two of Ha. She eagled on no. 11 to pull into a tie for the lead.

A birdie gave Henderson the lead heading into the final few holes. On the par-5 17th, she drove the green on her second shot and bent in a 15-foot eagle putt to clinch the win.

"It's an easy par-5, and I knew the (final pairing) could hit it in two also," Henderson said. "I wanted to give myself a chance. ...

"The ball was right on the edge, and I was like, 'Come on, please!' and it dropped. It felt great."

Henderson's round fell one shot shy of the course record of 10-under, shot by former PGA Tour member Jay Haas. Haas shot a 60 when the course played a par 70; this week, par was 71.

Henderson, who will play at the University of Florida after completing her senior year of high school, takes the course next weekend at the US Open.

"I really struggled the last couple of days," she said. "To have a great round today heading into next week is a huge confidence booster."
