Bisons lose first of season in Rochester

Niagara Gazette — ROCHESTER - The Rochester Red Wings avoided a four-game sweep by the Buffalo Bisons and handed the Herd its first loss of the season, routing Buffalo 14-5 at Frontier Field.

Buffalo native Jim Negrych hit his first home run as a Bison and went 2-for-3 for the game, also hitting a double.  Andy LaRoche homered twice while Eugenio Velez added a solo shot.

However, it was a game in which the Red Wings took early command, scoring five runs in the first inning.  Rochester built a 3-0 lead before its first out in the opening inning.  Tyson Brummett, who was called up to the Bisons from New Hampshire on Sunday morning, did not finish the first inning and took the loss for Buffalo.

The Bisons got on the scoreboard in the top of the second inning with Velez's and Negrych's respective home runs but the hosts responded with five more runs to lead 10-2 heading into the third inning.

Chris Colabello led Rochester, going 3-for-4 at the plate with one home run and two runs batted in. Starting pitcher Virgil Vasquez earned the win.

The Bisons used five pitchers, none of whom worked more than two and one-third innings.  Brummett and Bobby Korecky both surrendered five runs while Brad Lincoln gave up three, the latter on a three-run homer by Rochester's Clete Thomas.

The Bisons fell to 3-1 with the loss, after defeating Rochester twice at home and once on the road.

The Bisons return home to Coca-Cola Field on Monday to open a three-game series against the Syracuse Chiefs.  The opening pitch is scheduled for 6:05 p.m.
