Area Sports: "Pooky" Evans Memorial set for August 10

Niagara Gazette — The Niagara Christian Basketball program announced that the annual Nate “Pooky” Evans Memorial Tournament will be held on Saturday, August 10 beginning at 9 a.m. at Legends Park on Portage Road.

The tournament is named in memory of a man described by friends as a “true competitor an cheerful person.” 

Evans averaged 20 points, six rebounds and six assists per game during his years at Niagara Falls High School, from where he graduated in 1972. After attending Niagara County County Community College, Evans went on to work at SKW (later Arco Alloys) for approximately 20 years. He died in 1997.

• Suzette Kosikowski scored a 33 to lead Flight A in stroke play in last Friday’s Betty Sdao Memorial Ladies’ Golf League on the Hyde Park White Nine. Kosikowski also shared the Flight A lead in low putts with Lisa Hamilton, both of whom scored 15. Hamilton led the Flight in the weekly tournament.

Michelle Spancic was the Flight B stroke play leader with her score of 38, while Carla Smyth took the weekly tournament honors with her 37. Kayn Morrison led Flight B in low putts with 13.

In Flight C, Jean Roseberg led all competitors with her score of 36, while Karen Green scored a 38 to take honors in the weekly tournament. Yolanda Jakubowski was the low putt leader with 16.

• Morrison took top honors in Flight A in the Hyde Park Ladies’ 18-Hole Golf Club, scoring a 68 in a half-handicap format tournament. Lee Adriatico’s score of 67 gave her top honors in Flight B, while Judy Laur was the leader in Flight C with an 80.

In the league’s regular weekly tournament, Mamie Volpe took top honors in Flight A with her score of 29. Darlene DiMino also scored 29 to lead Flight B, while Carol Lindelow was the Flight C winner with her score of 34.

In low putts, Angela Randazzo and Marilyn Burak both scored 31 to lead Flights A and B, respectively. Judy Laur scored a 32 to lead Flight C.


Mike Gizzarelli went 3 for 3 to lead Health System Services to an 11-4 win over Westby’s Meerkats in the first round of the playoffs in the Town of Wheatfield Men’s B division. 

Jim Drabczyk went 3 for 4 at the plate, while teammate Jordan Kinney went 2 for 3 in the victory.

For the Meerkats, Mike Logan and Jim Moletto both went 2 for 3 at bat.
