Soccer: WNY Flash tie, Revs out of playoffs

Niagara Gazette — The Western New York Flash ended a west coast trip with a 1-1 tie at Portland Thorns FC, a game that included late drama including a penalty kick involving one of the game’s biggest American stars.

Flash player Abby Wambach, the Rochester native, was awarded the penalty kick in the game’s 84th minute, but her shot was correctly played by Portland goalkeeper Karina LeBlanc, who dove to her left to keep the ball out of the net.

Flash goalkeeper Adrianna Franch had to make several clutch saves in her own right, stopping Thorns striker and U.S. national team star Alex Morgan, a former WNY Flash player from the 2011 season.

Wambach scored the Flash’s only goal, in the 37th minute, while Meleana Shim responded for Portland with the equalizer just one minute later.

13,021 were in attendance at JELD-WEN Field in Portland to see the Flash improve their record to 6-4-6 and remain in fourth place in the National Women’s Soccer League. The host Thorns improved their record to 8-4-3 and keep their hold on second place in the NWSL.
