NYCBL schedule washed out by rain

Niagara Gazette — The Niagara Power travels, for the most part, in a small bus provided by Houghton College. Team President Cal Kern was considering asking for the loan of an ark after early-season rains wiped out yet another game – two, actually – Thursday at Sal Maglie Stadium.

The latest incident has actually cost the club a home date, as one of the games will be made up this afternoon at Geneva, home of Thursday night’s opponent. The Twins and Power were to meet four times this week in a home-and-home, but thus far only one game has been played, the Power’s impressive 5-1 victory at Geneva Wednesday night.

Of 11 Power dates so far this season, only three have not been affected by weather – the exhibition game June 4 in North East, PA, and last weekend’s home-and-home vs. Rochester.

The scheduling throws Power pitching the task of back-to-back double-headers, with a twinbill set for Sunday afternoon at Wellsville, each a nine-inning game in accordance with the New York State Collegiate League’s policy for regularly-scheduled double dips. The team is off Saturday, a “bye” enforced by the NYCBL’s 11-team makeup. As it happens, Saturday's forecast is the week's most promising.

Early indications are that if any team can handle a heavy pitching load, it’s the Power. Wednesday night at Geneva, starter-winner Zach Uher (2-0) served up 60 strikes in 98 throws, the game finished in little more than two hours. Rainouts swept the league Thursday; Niagara stands in second place, 3-1, a half-game out of first.
