NU's Mason earns preseason honors

Niagara Gazette — Niagara Purple Eagles junior guard Antoine Mason has been named to the All-MAAC Preseason First Team and the All-Big 4 Preseason First Team, both announced over the long weekend.

Mason had an historic campaign last season as he helped lead Niagara to the MAAC regular-season title. The Queens native was a part of a dynamic sophomore duo (with departed Juan'ya Green) that became the first pair of sophomores to reach the 1,000-point club in program and MAAC history and was the first set of sophomores to be named to the All-MAAC First Team in league history.

Mason was also named to the NABC Division I All-District 1 team and was the only Purple Eagle named to the MAAC All-Tournament Team. His career-high of 18.7 points per game were second in the conference, and he is the conference’s returning leading scorer. He scored in double figures in 28 out of 29 games, including 24 straight. Mason set new career-highs in field goal percentage (44.1), free throw percentage (79.4) and 3-point percentage (31.5).

Mason is joined on the conference first team by Iona’s Sean Armand and David Laury, Manhattan’s Rhamel Brown and George Beamon and Canisius’ Billy Baron.

Joining him on the Big 4 team are Baron and teammate Chris Manhertz, as well as the University at Buffalo's Javon McCrea and Will Regan. Mason, Baron and McCrea were unanimous selections.

The Purple Eagles open their season with a non-league game against Roberts Wesleyan at 7 p.m. Oct. 25 at the Gallagher Center.
