Krysztof takes over GI hoops

Niagara Gazette —

Ron Krysztop knows large-school basketball.

The first-year coach of the Grand Island boys team spend seven years as an assistant at Williamsville South before taking over the North Tonawanda junior varsity team for multiple seasons. This year, he'll attempt to use that experience on the Island in his first head coaching position at the varsity level.

"It's been a pretty smooth transition for me," Krysztop said. "We're trying to build this program from the bottom up."

Krysztop inherits a team that finished in the bottom half of the Niagara Frontier League last season but returns seven players. Gone, though, is all-league freshman guard Quinn Carey, whose family moved to Florida.

Starting for the Vikings will be senior point guard Nick Soos, junior guard Ryan Ross, senior guard Jordan Jelks, 6-foot-1 center Corey Adamshick and junior Jordan Wegrzyn.

"Nick's been phenomenal so far," Krysztop said. "We've changed a lot of the offense and we're  trying to play up-tempo, and he's done everything I've asked.

"Ryan is our shooter and we're going to heavily lean on him for scoring, and (Jelks) missed most of last season, so it's kind of like getting a new face."

Coming off the bench to play significant minutes will be senior guard Jake Sweeney and junior forward Derek Schutrum, who measures in at 6-foot-2.

"I'm really comfortable with our top five, and we're working with the other kids to get them into the swing of things," Krysztop said. "Right now, our game revolves around Nick pushing the ball up to (Jelks) and Ross and trying to get some easy buckets."

Krysztop made sure to add that the first few months of his first head coaching job have been great.

"I'd say its a fresh start for everybody," he said. "The seniors are very excited about the new offensive style.

"I honestly can't speak enough about the kids. They've been great and everybody's bought in to what we're trying to do."
