Area Sports: Golf, Basketball, Bocce, Softball

Niagara Gazette — James Blackwell and Christy Malo were the overall men’s and women’s winners, respectively, in the Two-Day Stroke Play tournament at River Oaks Golf Club in Grand Island this past weekend. 

Blackwell shot a 74 on Saturday and followed up with a 76 on Sunday. Malo scored 83 on Saturday and shot an 87 on Sunday. 

Both are now two-time champions.

Debbie Learman was the Women’s Flight A winner, while Sue Stark took top honors in Flight B.

Frank Delsignore, Vinny Bonura, Steve Studley and Mike Stark were the Men’s winners in Flights A, B, C and D, respectively.

• At the Betty Sdao Memorial Friday Ladies’ Golf League at Hyde Park, Suzette Kosilkowski was the latest stroke play leader in Flight A, scoring a 31. JoAnne Gazy took top honors in Flight B with her score of 35 and Yolanda Jakubowski led Flight C with her score of 40.

Lynn Yarger, Dorothy Gatto and Jean Rosenberg led Flights A, B and C, respectively, in both the weekly tournament and in low putts. Yarger and Gatto both had scores of 18 and 15, while Rosenberg scored 21 and 17 in the respective events.

BASKETBALL

Niagara Falls High School boys basketball went 2-4 over the weekend at the Canisius College Team Camp. Their first game was a loss to Williamsville South, 49-41. Vinzell Watkins and Charles Lamar had 10 points each. Game Two was a 51-39 win over Wayne HS, during which Watkins had 15 points while Breon Harris added 11. In Game Three, Toronto-based Game A defeated NFHS, 58-26. Rochester-based ICC Truth defeated NFHS, 59-51, in Game Four, with Elijah Griggs and Mikey Bermudez scoring a dozen points apiece. The hosts, Canisius, trounced NFHS by 66-24 on Sunday, but NFHS ended their camp on a winning note, beating St. Joe’s, 53-48. Bermudez had 15 points while Tyler Sanders and Antwan Palmer had 12 points each.

SOFTBALL

Mark Cerrone, Inc. went 2-0 in a doubeheader against two different opponents in Niagara Frontier Men’s Softball action. In their first game, Mark Cerrone, Inc. defeated Kelly’s Corners, 10-2. Louis Reed, Kevin Carpenter, Jeff Stahlman and Anthony Ciralo all went 2 for 4 in the win. George Churakos played a solid defensive game for the winners.

In their second game, Mark Cerrone, Inc. defeated Brickyard, 14-9. Reed, Reggie Warner, Jimmy Kilbride and Jeff Vicki all went 3 for 4 while Jeff Salvatore hit a home run for the winners.
