Area Sports Roundup: Niagara PAL U16 wins girls soccer title

Niagara Gazette — The Niagara PAL Bulldogs won the Buffalo and Western New York Travel Soccer League U16 division championship, defeating the Hamburg Monarchs in the title game, 2-1. 

Marina Campbell scored both goals for Niagara PAL.

Goalkeeper Justine Perreault again put in a strong performance, with Kayleigh Siford, Kurstin Siford, Shannon Martineau, Jenna Gioannini, Jasene Smith and Joanna Parsnick contributing at defense to preserve the lead and claim the championship.


The VFW Post 917 Red Sox have forced a one-game playoff against the Goodfellas Pizzeria Yankees for the Hyde Park Babe Ruth Minors division championship, following the Red Sox's 4-1 win against the Yankees that brought both teams' records to 15-3. 

Riley Cardinali drove home two runs on two hits for the Red Sox, while holding the Yankees to just one hit during four innings pitched, striking out eight batters along the way. J.J. Brady also had an RBI, while Jace Luchese had two hits for the Red Sox.

For the Yankees, Trevor Kennedy had a hit while Tyler Kennedy pitched five innings, allowing six hits while striking out 10 batters.

The one-game playoff will be held next Tuesday at 5:45 p.m. at Hyde Park.


Anne Kist, Joanne McCartin, Nancy Linton and Barbara Joyce were the Medal Play winners in their respective flights in the Hyde Park Wednesday Women's Nine-Hole League this week. Kist shot a 34 to take top honors in Flight A, with Carolyn King finishing second with her score of 38. Dorothea Nortz placed third with her score of 40.

McCartin led Flight B with a 35, while Kelly Greene (37) and Elaine McLanaghan (39) rounded out the flight's top three.

Linton scored a 42 in Flight C then won a tiebreaker against runner-up Eileen Girraffa. Marie Briganti shot a 44 to take third, after prevailing in her own tiebreaker against Sue Nutt.

Joyce shot a 54 to take Flight D honors, with Mary Lostracco and Judy Major finishing out the top three. 

Hole 5 was a popular one for birdies, with Kist, Joyce and Shirley Wisniewski all scoring them on that hole.
