GI beats NT in boys soccer

Niagara Gazette — Grand Island boys’ soccer improved its record to 7-1 in the Niagara Frontier League (7-3 overall) by blanking North Tonawanda, 2-0, at Grand Island High School on Wednesday afternoon.

Troy Brady and Aaron Cook scored the Vikings’ goals. Justin Filler recorded seven saves to earn the shutout against the the Lumberjacks (4-5-1, 4-4 NFL).

Eden 2, Tonawanda 0

Jesse Bortz made nine saves in the losing effort for the Warriors (0-10, 0-6 NFL) against the Raiders (3-3).

Starpoint 7, W. Sen. East 1

Nick Dumond set a school record for points in a game with five as the Spartans downed the Trojans. Dumond had two goals and three assists and Ryan Schupp added two goals for the Spartans.

GIRLS SOCCER

Lockport 4, Lew-Port 0

Jayme Wadosky made seven saves to finish with her fifth straight shutout as the Lions (10-0, 8-0 NFL) defeated the Lancers. Jill Golding, Miranda Kiff, Gretta Dry and Kennedy Smith lit the lamp for the Lions.

Grand Island 3, North Tonawanda 3

Madisyn Pezzino had a pair of goals and Julia Kelly scored the game-tying goal to knot up the Vikings’ contest against the Lumberjacks (7-2-1, 6-2-1 NFL). Kelly Nichols, Gina Malone and Nicole Malone notched goals for the Lumberjacks.

Tonawanda 7, Lackawanna 0

Goals were aplenty for Tonawanda’s girls soccer team, as they defeated the Lackawanna Steelers 7-0.

The Warriors (8-2, 7-0 ECIC), who were coming off of a big win over Holland, were on a high going into their contest with the Steelers (0-7), according to head coach Julie Johnson.

“The win over Holland was our first against them in five years, so our confidence was at an all-time high going into the Lackawanna game,” Johnson said. “We were a little sore and beat up from that too, so we figured that we’ll go into the (Steelers) game to work on a few things and we managed to come away with a good victory.”

Alexis Lilly, Hope Balling, Chezney Belcher, Shelby Stone, Kayle Stuart, Kristin Carson and Grace Stranahan each scored for the Warriors. Alanna Herne made two saves to record the shutout.

Newfane 2, Wilson 2

Savannah Jonathan had a pair of goals for the Panthers (4-4-1, 4-2-1 Niagara Orleans League) and Angela Goodman and Bekah Dlasius scored for the Lakemen (8-0-1, 6-0-1 N-O).

GIRLS TENNIS

North Tonawanda 4, Niagara Falls 1

Gretchen Ringler, Jessica Robins and Samantha Kennedy won in singles matches for the Lumberjacks (8-2) and Carly McClinsey and Amanda Dreier emerged victorious in doubles matches to defeat the Wolverines (5-5).

Celina Wozniak won in singles for the Bulldogs (6-4) 6-1, 6-1 and Krista Cornell, Kim Bing, Courtney Creasey and Shaemaa Darbo clinched the victory in doubles 7-6, (7-2), 6-4, 6-2, 6-2 over the Vikings (4-5).

Lina Trunzo and Heather Stahlman emerged victorious in singles matches for the Falcons (7-3) and Sam Dworzanski, Megan Breier, Megan Povinelli and Nicole Dworzanski won in doubles to down the Lancers (1-9).

Stephanie Male had three aces and one assist and Katja Brusino had one kill for the Patriots (0-9) as they fell to the Bears (5-1) 25-2, 25-2, 25-13. Jordan DiMartino had 13 aces for the Bears.

Wilson 3, Roy-Hart 2

Allie Bubar had 14 kills and 28 digs, Dana Smith recorded seven kills and Emily Lasher added 25 assists to help the Lakemen beat the Rams.

BOYS VOLLEYBALL

Lake Shore 3, Starpoint 1

Devin Joslyn recorded 23 kills in the Eagles’ victory over the Spartans.

BOYS GOLF

Niagara Falls 272, Ken West 287

James Spanbauer medaled by shooting 42 to lead the Wolverines (2-6-1) over the Blue Devils (1-8-1) at Hyde Park Golf Club.

Nia.-Wheatfield 258, Grand Island 282

Matt Borque shot 38 for the Falcons (7-3) to lead them to victory over the Vikings (4-6) at Tan Tara Golf Club. Kevin Borowicz medaled by shooting 37 for the Vikings.
