HS Football: Lakemen blanked at home, 48-0

Niagara Gazette — The Wilson Lakemen fell to 0-3 on the season with a tough, one-sided loss at home Friday night to one of Western New York’s tougher programs, Cheektowaga-based Cleveland Hill.

Brandon Thomas ran for 186 yards and three touchdowns, as the Eagles blanked Wilson, 48-0.

Two of Thomas’ touchdowns came on runs of at least 50 yards.

“They didn’t give up,” said Wilson head coach William Atlas, when asked if there was anything positive his players could take from the game. “They played their hearts out and didn’t quit.”

They also threw everything but the kitchen sink, so to speak, at Cleve Hill while trying to stop a potent Eagle offense. Coach Atlas pointed to senior Justin Westmorland as “being all over the field” and making 12 tackles for the Lakemen.

Wilson also had the uphill task of facing a Cleve Hill defense that has allowed only 13 points in just three games. Wilson’s Kevin Daunce rushed for 59 yards on five carries, while Hunter Howland threw for 14 pass completions, good for 55 yards.

Atlas conceded it just wasn’t his team’s destiny to beat the Eagles Friday night. However, after a tough 0-3 start he anticipates a turnaround.

“I was honest to them at the start of the season. I told them I didn’t know what to expect against Akron,” Atlas said.”I’m still bothered by the Newfane game because that’s a game I thought we could have won.”

He considers their next four opponents “beatable.” Next Saturday, the Lakemen travel to JFK High School in Cheektowaga. JFK is 0-1 on the season and plays Lackawanna this afternoon.

Following next Saturday’s road game, Wilson travels to Tonawanda and then hosts Barker/Roy-Hart and Lackawanna.
