Heavy snow puts sports on sidelines

With steady wet snow piling up Friday afternoon throughout Western New York, local school officials cancelled the majority of Friday night’s high school sporting events.

All Niagara Frontier League basketball games, boys and girls, involving local teams were cancelled. Boys games (Lockport at Niagara Falls, 6:30 p.m.; Grand Island at Niagara-Wheatfield, 6:30 p.m.; Lew-Port at North Tonawanda, 7 p.m.) were moved to Monday, and girls games (Niagara-Wheatfield at Grand Island, 6:30 p.m.; Niagara Falls at Lockport, 6:30 p.m.) were moved to Thursday.

In non-NFL boys games, Starpoint at Iroquois was moved to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Walsh at Niagara Catholic was moved to 1 p.m. Feb. 17.

The only local team to play Friday night was the Niagara Catholic girls, who lost to No. 1 small school O’Hara.
