NARROW LOSS

Niagara Gazette — The St. Bonaventure women's basketball team used a 12-0 run to overcome a five-point halftime deficit and beat Niagara 51-49 Monday at the Gallagher Center.

Lauren Gatto had 12 point and 11 rebounds to lead Niagara. Her last basket, with 4:40 left, cut St. Bonaventure's lead to 47-45.

Doris Ortega hit a pair of free throws and scored inside on the next two possessions to push Bonaventure's lead up to 51-45.

The Bonnies (2-0) missed the front end of two one-and-one opportunites late, but the Purple Eagles (1-1) couldn't close the gap in time.

Kayla Stroman was the only other Niagara player in double figures, but the point guard needed 15 field goal attempts for her 11 points. Stroman, the preseason pick for Big 4 player of the year, also had three assists and three steals.

Ortega led St. Bonaventure with 14 points and 10 rebounds.

The Bonnies, who went to the Sweet 16 last year, have now won 14 straight true road games.

Niagara returns to its home floor Thursday to host Bowling Green.
