FC Buffalo lose, WNY Flash tie in soccer

Niagara Gazette — FC Buffalo, just two days after blanking a Michigan opponent on the road, was on the receiving end of a shutout as National Premier Soccer League Great Lakes division leading Detroit City FC handed the Blitzers a 4-0 loss.

Grant Chong, Shawn Lawson and Austin Oldham scored for Detroit City, while the fourth goal against Buffalo came by way of an own-goal off a Blitzer player’s body.

The hosts improved their record to 8-0 while FC Buffalo fell to 7-2 on the season. The Blitzers return to game action next Sunday at 1 p.m. when they host their archrivals, the Erie Admirals, at Robert Rich Sr. All-High Stadium in Buffalo.

Wambach scores as WNY Flash tie Seattle

Just three days after becoming the world’s all-time scoring leader in international play, Abby Wambach was again scoring but this time in front of her hometown fans. Her penalty kick helped the Western New York Flash force a 1-1 tie against the Seattle Reign before 6,347 fans at Sahlen’s Stadium in Rochester. It was the first National Women’s Soccer League home game for the Flash in a month.

With the tie, the Flash extended its unbeaten streak to eight games. The team improved its record to five wins, four ties and two losses.

Wambach, a Rochester native, was honored prior to the game for her achievement last Thursday at Red Bull Stadium in Harrison, N.J. By scoring four goals for the U.S. Women’s National Team in a friendly match against South Korea, Wambach passed former U.S. star Mia Hamm to become the top scorer in international competition.

Empire Revs split weekend games

The Empire Revs, a Buffalo-based women’s team competing in the Women’s Premier Soccer League, a tier below the WNY Flash and NWSL, split its weekend road games.
