Bisons win 1-0 in 14 innings

Niagara Gazette — The Buffalo Bisons and Durham Bulls went scoreless for 13 1/2 innings Sunday. The host Bisons finally scored the winning run — the only one of the game — in the bottom of the 14th inning on a sacrifice bunt by Ricardo Nanita, ending a marathon matchup, 1-0, at Coca-Cola Field in downtown Buffalo.

It is, according to the Bisons, the longest scoreless game played in the history of their downtown Buffalo ballpark.

Mike Nickeas scored the game’s lone run on the bunt by Nanita, who was put into the game as a pinch hitter. Nickeas himself was a late insertion into the game, entering it in the 11th inning.

Jose Reyes, the Toronto Blue Jays shortstop playing in his third game of an injury rehab assignment in Buffalo, had two of the Bisons’ seven total hits. Ryan Goins also hit twice.

Six Buffalo pitchers combined to give up eight hits. The last one to pitch, Joel Carreno, got the win to improve his record to 1-1.

Buffalo hosts Durham again tonight at 7:05 p.m. to close out the series and the Bisons’ latest homestand. Ricky Romero is expected to start on the mound for Buffalo, while Mike Montgomery is scheduled to start for the Bulls.

Bisons fans have a bonus opportunity to watch Reyes play for Buffalo. The Bisons announced Sunday that Reyes, who was originally scheduled to stay for only three days, will play one more game and will be in Buffalo’s lineup tonight.
