Niagara Gazette — The 14U Thunderwolves improved their season record to 6-2 and took sole possession of first place in the Clarence Travel Baseball League following Wednesday's 6-3 win over the Clarence Red Devils. Paul Barker, David Gariano and Dawson Bailey combined for four hits and three RBIs. Bobby Newbury and Mike Laurrie also added key hits, breaking a 3-3 tie. Pitchers Matt Grace and Chris Ewing combined for the victor, with Ewing shutting down Clarence in the final three innings of the game.
• In other travel baseball action, the Mark Cerrone 12U Jr. Thunderwolves defeated Mathewson McCarthy of Williamsville, 9-2. Ian Evans, James Filippelli and Matt Carden combined to pitch a one-hitter. Carden and Evans also contributed at bat with two hits apiece, driving in four and two runs, respectively. Filippelli also had an RBI while Cody Haseley hit two runs home and carried out a suicide squeeze bunt. Ethan Burke had five defensive putouts at second base. The Thunderwolves increased their record to 5-2 and will play this weekend in the Darien Lake Tournament.
• The Niagara Jr. Power defeated New Era, 4-1, Wednesday night at Fairmount Park. Winning pitcher Quinn Corrao and Jim Martinic combined on a two-hitter with seven strikeouts. Duke Hwang led the offense with a three-run homer. Dan George and Tom Anderson each scored a run while catcher Chris Cribbs added the other RBI.
The Hyde Park Men's Golf Club held its annual Fred Volpe Memorial Tournament ,sponsored by Mom's Family Restaurant, last weekend on the North 18 of Hyde Park Golf Course. Paul Kudela was the Class A gross winner with a score of 71. Jo Jo Perry came in second with a 75 while Woody Cummings was right behind with a score of 76. The Class A low net winner was Paul DeMunda, who scored a 68.
In Class B, the gross winner was T. Pratt with 83, followed by Tim Rickard at 84 and Dave Cuddy at 86. The Class B low net winner was Tom Teeto, Jr. with a score of 66.
The team of First Niagara, featuring Les Sniezek and Eric Scheffler, defeated BMP America (Sam Lebold and Jake Collins) in two sets, 6-2, 6-1, in the Les Nassoiy Tennis League on Thursday evening. In other action, Niagara Catholic (Will Whisker and Brian Kurtis) defeated Synacor (Tom O'Donnell and Kevin Kramarz) in three sets, 6-2, 3-6, 7-6 (7-0). Meanwhile, the team of Niagara University (Pete Butera and Burt Thompson) were awarded a win by default.
Pat D'Anna bowled a 279 and total 702 to pace the Guido's Upholstery/Joe's Guys League at Rapids Bowling Center. D'Anna's series also included 209 and 214. Behind D'Anna were Dennis Rott (257-662) and Dennis Milleville (234-659).
