Bills elevate Roosevelt to active roster

— — The Buffalo Bills promoted homegrown receiver Naaman Roosevelt from the practice squad to the 53-man active roster on Saturday.

Roosevelt, the former Connolly Cup-winning St. Joe’s quarterback who went on to reset all of the University at Buffalo’s receiving records, joined the Bills as an undrafted free agent in March, and was one of team’s final cuts after a strong training camp and preseason.

Coach Chan Gailey said Saturday that Roosevelt has done an “excellent job” in his practice squad role during the first 12 weeks of the season.

According to BuffaloBills.com, Roosevelt spent extra time fielding punts at Friday’s practice and may be activated to the 45-man game day roster to return kicks in today’s home game against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The Bills also activated linebacker Thomas Williams to the 53-man roster, while putting linebackers Shawne Merriman and Keith Ellison on season-ending injured reserve. Williams is a former fifth-round pick of the Jacksonville Jaguars who played in six games as a rookie in 2008, and has since spent time on the Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots practice squads. He was signed to the Bills practice squad Oct. 12.

This is the second straight week the Bills have added a native Western New Yorker to the main roster. Fullback Jehuu Caulcrick of Clymer was activated prior to last Sunday’s game in Cincinnati, and rushed for a first down in the comeback win.

Roosevelt joins Niagara Falls native James Starks (Green Bay Packers running back), Jamey Richard (Indianapolis Colts guard), Trevor Scott (Oakland Raiders defensive end), and Mike Newton (Indianapolis Colts safety) as UB graduates on NFL rosters.
