Niagara Gazette — STAFF REPORTS
It was an unhappy ending for the Niagara women’s soccer team not far from “the happiest place on Earth.”
Katie Griffin’s goal in the 31st minute lifted Niagara’s archrivals Canisius College to a 1-0 victory over the Purple Eagles in the first round of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Tournament at the Disney ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando, Florida.
Griffin pounced on a loose ball after Niagara goalkeeeper Claire Feiertag lost control of it, taking possession in the 18-yard box and scoring what later proved to be the game-winner.
Niagara had its chances early, with Naomi Giovino’s corner kick in the eighth minute resulting in a Catherine Meyer shot on the Canisius goal that was stopped by Griffins goalkeeper Megan Tock.
Tock finished the game with six stops while Niagara’s Feiertag made five saves.
The ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex, on the outskirts of the massive Walt Disney World complex, is hosting this year’s MAAC Tournament. Canisius will face its next opponent there, the top-seeded Monmouth, this afternoon at 2:15 p.m.
Niagara finishes the season with a record of 4-13-2.
