NU hockey drops season opener, 2-1

Niagara Gazette —

LEWISTON — Niagara turned to first-year goaltender Jackson Teichroeb to start the Purple Eagles' 2013-14 season opener Saturday night at Dwyer Arena.

He rose to the occasion, stopping a whopping 39 shots — 20 more saves than his counterpart in the other net — and earning the game's "first star" honor.

Unfortunately, his teammates could only produce one goal while, finally, the Clarkson Golden Knights were able to solve Teichroeb late as they handed Niagara a 2-1 loss.

In the end, Niagara was outshot 41 to 20.

"I was so impressed with Jackson," said Niagara head coach Dave Burkholder. "Man, oh, man he was the star of the game. Unfortunately we didn't get the win for him. They had a pretty lucky bounce on their first one, off the back wall. But he was highly decorated coming out of junior. We thought he was going to be really good."

NOTES: Niagara held a brief preseason ceremony to unroll two new banners from the rafters of Dwyer Arena. One commemorates the team's 2012-13 Atlantic Hockey Association regular season championship, while the other marks Niagara's subsequent appearance in the 2013 NCAA Tournament... Ryan Murphy was not in the lineup for what the team would only describe as "personal reasons." After the game Burkholder said Murphy took a personal leave and there is "no timetable for his return"… Tyler Akeson took a nasty hit into the stanchion at the end of the Niagara bench and needed help getting over the boards to be looked at. There were immediate fears of a concussion or some other upper body injury but, remarkably, he was back on the ice just a couple of shifts later.
