Niagara Gazette — Niagara University head hockey coach David Burkholder is a finalist for the Spencer Penrose Award, which honors the top NCAA Division I college hockey coach in the nation, the school reported on Wednesday.
To qualify for the award, a candidate must win his conference’s coach of the year honor or lead his team to the NCAA Frozen Four. Burkholder was named Coach of the Year by the Atlantic Hockey Association. While his Purple Eagles qualified for the NCAA tournament the team was eliminated by North Dakota in the first round.
In 2013-13, the Purple Eagles surpassed the school’s record for most wins and points in a single season, finishing the year with an overall record of 23-10-5.
The award winner will be announced on April 10 in Pittsburgh, Pa.
