NU softball splits, baseball loses

Niagara Gazette — Niagara University softball finished its run at the Dawg Pound Invitational in Baltimore with a split, losing 8-0 to Drexel in its first game Sunday but then romping over Hampton, 9-2, in its final game.

Bridget Hogan took the loss against Drexel, who scored seven of their right runs off the freshman pitcher on seven hits in the second inning. The Dragons added one more run in the fifth inning.

The Purple Eagles were held to three hits against Drexel.

In the game against Hampton, Niagara (7-9) was led by a four RBI output by Aileen Hinton (Barker) and 3-for-4 performance by Desarae Maldonado that included two RBI. Amanda Werth (Gasport) drove home runs on a double.

Jennifer Sansano picked up her second complete game win of the weekend. Niagara softball travels to Youngstown State for a doubleheader on Wednesday.

Northeastern beats NU baseball

The Purple Eagles finished their three-game series at Northeastern University in Boston, losing Sunday’s game 7-0 to go 0-3 in the series.

Redshirt junior Drew Fittry started the game throwing three scoreless innings but the Huskies finally got to him with a three-run fourth inning. The Huskies added two runs in the sixth and seventh innings and were able to keep the Purple Eagles from getting on the soreboard.

Fittry took the loss for NU. Niagara baseball (4-13) travels to St. Bonaventure on Tuesday.
