Casal's comeback fight canceled

Niagara Gazette — Nick Casal’s comeback trail grew a little longer Wednesday.

A day before the 28-year-old welterweight was scheduled to make his return to the ring at after a nearly two-year break, Casal’s would-be opponent, Shakha Moore, was denied a license to fight in New York State because of a Lasik procedure he had over a year ago.

That left Casal, a Niagara Falls native who hasn’t fought since a brutal May 2012 attack left him hospitalized with over 100 stitches, without an opponent. Vincent Arroyo, an Amherst super welterweight who was set to take on Marlon Lewis prior to Casal’s main event at tonight’s Fight on the Falls at the Niagara Falls Conference and Events Center, offered to give up his spot on the card so Casal could fight Lewis in front of his hometown.

Lewis likely could’ve made weight, but his pre-fight MRI turned up an issue that left him without a license as well.

Stepping into Casal’s place in the main event will be Buffalo cruiserweight Greg Brady (4-1, 4 KOs), who will take on undefeated Joel Shojgreen (8-0, 7 KOs).

The Gazette learned of the cancellations late Wednesday night and was unable to contact Casal or promotor Mercedes Vazquez-Simmons for comment.

The Buffalo News reported that anyone who purchased tickets would be offered tickets to Vazquez-Simmons’ next event, which she said is being planned for May 4 and will feature both Casal and Arroyo.

Further coverage, including comments from Casal, will be available online at Niagara-Gazette.com and in Friday’s paper following the event.
