Junior Sabres open OJHL playoffs Thursday

Niagara Gazette

Niagara Gazette — The Buffalo Junior Sabres will open the first-round of the Ontario Junior Hockey League playoffs at home Thursday night, when they host the Mississauga Chargers in Game One of their best-of-seven series at the Northtown Center at Amherst, beginning at 8 p.m.

The Jr. Sabres, led by NHL alumnus turned general manager/head coach Michael Peca, clinched their second consecutive OJHL West Division regular season title last weekend.

After traveling to Mississauga for Game Two, the Jr. Sabres will host the third game of the series in downtown Buffalo at the First Niagara Center on Sunday, March 2 at 7 p.m.

Given the need to hastily arrange playoff dates on short notice and with local ice already booked, the team's dates for Games Five and Seven, if necessary, were not yet firmed up as of Tuesday evening.

The Jr. Sabres roster includes seven players who have committed to NCAA Division I hockey programs including two who will enroll at Canisius College next fall, Ryan Schmelzer and Nolan Sheeran.
