NU's Sansano named to MAAC Preseason Team

Niagara Gazette — Niagara University senior softball pitcher Jennifer Sansano, the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference’s Pitcher of the Year for 2013, was named Wednesday to the MAAC Preseason Team.

The announcement comes as her team was picked eighth in the MAAC’s preseason poll.

Sansano is the first pitcher in NU history to earn the MAAC honor. Last season, she set a school record with 185 strikeouts in 156.2 innings. Sansano also recorded a no-hitter on April 21, striking out 10 batters in the Purple Eagles’ 5-0 win over Manhattan. She finished with a record of 10-11 overall, including a 6-3 record in the MAAC.

In what started as a season involving a controversial coaching shakeup, the Purple Eagles rebounded with a nine-game winning streak that helped earn them their first winning record in the MAAC, 9-7, and first postseason appearance in three years.

Including Sansano, NU returns six starters including last year’s leading hitter and run scorer, Brittany Richberg.

Niagara opens the softball season on February 21 at the Phoenix Opening Tournament, hosted by Elon.
