Niagara Gazette — Coming off a home-and-home series last week against regional rivals Canisius, the Niagara University hockey team opens another such series tonight, this time against Robert Morris University.
Niagara hosts the first of the two games, with tonight’s opening faceoff at Dwyer Arena set for 7:05 p.m.
The Purple Eagles (9-15-4 overall, 9-8-4 AHA) currently sit in sixth place and trail the Colonials (11-13-4 overall, 11-6-4 AHA) in the Atlantic Hockey Association standings by four points, with both teams entering tonight’s contest coming off wins.
The Purple Eagles completed its home-and-home against Canisius last Saturday at Buffalo State College, where they defeated the Golden Griffins by a 4-2 score. It was a satisfying improvement for Niagara, who squandered a two-goal lead two nights prior at home and settled for a 4-4 tie.
The Purple Eagles and Colonials have met once already this season, with the teams skating to a 3-3 tie at Robert Morris. Niagara won the series last season, 2-1, and has an overall record of 27-12-9 against the Colonials.
Isaac Kohls remains Niagara’s leading scorer with 11 goals and 11 assists, while Hugo Turcotte has nine goals and 12 assists on the season to make him the team’s second-leading scorer. Turcotte shares the team lead in assists with hometown native Vince Muto.
Tonight’s game will be broadcast live on WLVL 1340 AM radio and Time Warner Cable SportsChannel.
The second game of the series will be played Saturday night at the 84 Lumber Arena in Neville Island, Penn., a suburb of Pittsburgh.
