Niagara Gazette —
Last year, it was Grand Island's Kevin Borowicz who finished third at the Section VI golf qualifier and earned a chance to compete at the state level.
This year, Aaron Schauger one-upped his long-time teammate, shooting a 27-hole 114 at Diamond Hawk Golf Club in Cheektowaga and becoming the first Viking to medal at the event since at least the mid 90s.
Schauger hit a 38 on the front nine, then tied the top score of the day with a 36 on the back nine to finish with a two-stroke lead after an 18-hole 74. He then shot a 40 in the nine-hole second round, holding off Williamsville North's David Berkun, who finished with a 115.
The senior will compete at states for the first time June 1-2 in Ithaca.
Borowicz, who was the Niagara Gazette Player of the Year in fall and the qualifier's top seed, finished with a 123. After starting slow with a 45 on the front nine, he rallied, shooting a 39 going in to finish with an 18-hole 84. He shot a 39 in the second round, but missed making the state team by three strokes.
Starpoint's Tyler Durkin and Will Hoffman finished 24th and 25th, shooting an 18-hole 86 and 87, respectively.
Niagara-Wheatfield's Zach Dubuc finished 30th with an 88, while teammate John Liberti finished 38th with a 90 before heading home to help the Falcons win a sectional baseball game.
