NCCC baseball heading back to Series

Niagara Gazette — The Niagara County Community College baseball team is returning to the NJCAA Division III World Series, where last year it came just a few outs away from winning a national championship.

“It’s a once in a lifetime experience to get to say you’ve played in the Junior College World Series,” said coach Matt Clingersmith, a Niagara Falls native.

“Now this sophomore class can say they went twice.”

NCCC booked another trip to Tyler, Texas — it’s third in six years — with a 5-1 win Sunday over Erie Community College in the Region III championship series in Little Falls.

The Thunderwolves (37-16), winners of eight straight and ranked fifth in the country, opened the regional playoffs with an 8-3 win over ECC on Friday and defeated Herkimer 10-5 in 11 innings Saturday.

Marcus Cavarello got the win on the mound Sunday, striking out nine batters in eight innings and allowing just one earned run on four hits. George Weber struck out the side in the ninth to earn the save. Tournament MVP Russell McGibbon had two hits and two RBIs, John Knauth and Pat Quinn each had two hits and an RBI, and Virginia Tech recruit Mike Ellwood had two hits and a double.

Anthony Schiro (Niagara-Wheatfield) and Kyle Craig joined McGibbon on the all-tournament team. McGibbon was a first-team all-region selection, and Craig and Ellwood were named to the second team.
