Niagara Gazette — Sectional play for the area's boy's lacrosse teams starts today, with three local squads finding themselves on the road in pre-quarterfinal matchups.
Grand Island, Lewiston-Porter and Wilson will load up the buses on their way to playoff games today, while Niagara-Wheatfield earned itself a first-round bye and a home contest in next Tuesday's quarterfinals.
Lew-Port earned the No. 9 seed in Class C and will travel to face No. 8 Amherst at 4:45 p.m. The Lancers (3-13, 3-10 Class C) lost to Amherst, 12-6, on May 2, and haven't won since a 9-4 decision over Wilson on April 23.
The Lakemen took the No. 10 seed in Class C with a 2-14 record, including 2-8 in league games. They play at No. 7 Eden on Friday, a team that beat them 15-4 on May 7.
Wilson made it to the semifinals last season, but that team graduated 10 seniors.
Grand Island took the No. 10 seed in Class B and travels to take on nearby rival Sweet Home (No. 7). The Vikings went 5-9 overall, but only 1-8 in games within its class, which is arguably the toughest in the area. They lost a low-scoring affair to the Panthers, 8-5, on April 18, but have one three of their last five games.
The Falcons (9-6, 8-2) grabbed the No. 2 seed in Class B and will host the winner of Grand Island/Sweet Home on Tuesday.Follow Gazette sports reporter Mike Meiler on Twitter @mikemeiler for updates on your local teams.
