Niagara Gazette —

After sitting out for two weeks with a shoulder injury, Mike Eagler had a strong return for the Niagara Falls baseball team, pitching 6 1/3 innings, allowing five hits and striking out seven in a 3-1 win over Niagara-Wheatfield in Niagara Frontier League play Monday afternoon.

"He got ahead of every batter," said Niagara Falls coach Joe Contento. "He threw his curve for a strike all game long."

Eagler left the game in the 7th with the bases loaded. Senior Joe Colosi earned the save with a strike out and a pop out.

The Wolverines (7-3 NFL) only had only three hits in the game, but were able to score runs by playing small ball. Jake Martineau had a RBI on a squeeze bunt and Matt Colosi knocked in a run on a sacrifice fly.

Brenden Gilewski threw a complete game for the Falcons (5-5).

Lockport 15, North Tonawanda 6

Nick Baron went 1 for 3 with a double, a walk and a run scored, while Devin Johannas and Taylor Mott each added a hit for the Lumberjacks (1-9 NFL). Lockport remains atop the league at 9-1.

Sweet Home 6, Starpoint 2

The Spartans (11-4, 7-3 ECIC II) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning, but that was all they'd get against pitcher Justin Bystrak and the Panthers (4-6). Stan Speaker and Alex O'Donnell singled in the first, and Andrew Rankie and Brett Guay knocked in the runs. The loss ends Starpoint's four-game winning streak.

Grand Island 9, Lew-Port 1

Quinn Corrao pitched a complete-game four-hitter and John Holody and Josh Ungaro each had two RBIs for the Vikings (8-2 NFL), who remained in second place in the league. Joe Scirto knocked in a run and Jordan Willard went 2 for 3 for the Lancers (4-6).

Brianna Clark contributed two hits and three RBIs to the offense.

Grand Island 14, Lew-Port 1

Alley Cutting and Melissa Gibson each hit home runs and Jillian Sheehan and Rosie Russel combined to give up just one earned run for the Vikings (9-2), who sit in second place in the NFL with a game against first-place Niagara Falls (9-1) on Wednesday.

Sheehan struck out four in five innings and was charged with the run. Russel came in with runners on in the sixth and faced only six batters in two innings pitched.

Jenna Neff, Ashley Colan and Natalie Argy each finished 2 for 3 from the plate.

Niagara Falls 5, Nia.-Wheatfield 4

Jerri Ann Orfano hit a late two-run bomb and Jasmine Petrishin added two RBIs and a double for the Wolverines (9-1), who remained in first place in the NFL. Petrishin and N-W freshman Marissa Hayes both pitched complete games, with Katie Mazierski and Bri Krawczyk driving in runs for the Falcons.

Niagara Catholic 6, O'Hara 5

The Patriots (7-2, 3-2 MMA) were rewarded for two lengthy plate appearances from Christina Schulte and Leah McClain when they scored the game-winning run on a wild pitch in the bottom of the seventh.

"Both teams battled throughout the game back and forth," said Niagara Catholic coach Robert Costanzo. "Both teams played great defense, but we didn't put heads down."

Tylerlynn Langer threw a complete game for Niagara Catholic while going 2 for 3 with two doubles. Marissa Ruffolo finished 3 for 4 with two RBIs.
