PRO BASKETBALL: Gamble to play for Buffalo Stampede

By Jonah Bronstein
Niagara Gazette

Greg Gamble stayed in Western New York to play college basketball. He’s doing the same thing now as a professional.

The Niagara Falls native has accepted an offer to join the Buffalo Stampede and will be one of several players introduced at a Monday press conference at Gamble’s alma mater, the University at Buffalo.

Gamble said Thursday that he will also do marketing and corporate sales work for the Stampede franchise, which is entering its second year in the Premier Basketball League.

“I think it’s an awesome opportunity,” Gamble said. “Basketball has kept me in Buffalo so far, and people that have known me my whole life have been able to follow my basketball career and share in the experience.”

After helping Niagara Falls High School win a state championship and attain national prominence in 2005, Gamble played four years at UB, starting all but two games in his final three seasons.

Converted to point guard as a senior, Gamble led the Bulls to a 21-win season, a regular season Mid-American Conference East division title, and the championship game of the MAC tournament.

Gamble said he got offers to play in Germany and Austria after the season, but thought he would get better opportunities after playing in showcase events over the summer. Although he made the all-star team at a Eurobasket camp in Chicago and also played well in Las Vegas, he didn’t get any recent invitations to go overseas.

“Things haven’t worked out the way I planned but I’m still grateful,” he said. “A lot of people take different roads to make it.”

With the Stampede focusing on local appeal in making this year’s roster, Gamble will be playing with former Bulls teammates Andy Robinson and Roderick Middleton, as well as Danny Gilbert, who graduated from UB the year before Gamble arrived on campus.

A more financially-stable stepchild of Buffalo’s previous failed attempts at minor league basketball — the American Basketball Association’s Rapids and Silverbacks — the Stampede went 1-19 in their first season in the PBL.
