HS ROUNDUP (Oct. 14): Buerger leads N-W to NFL golf title

Niagara-Wheatfield senior Alex Buerger shot a 3-over-par 75 to earn medalist honors and help the Falcons to the team title at the annual Niagara Frontier League Tournament at Willwbrook Golf Course in cool, breezy conditions Tuesday.

N-W finished with 427 strokes, while Kenmore East was second with 442. Lew-Port and Grand Island tied for third at 444, while Lockport (449), Kenmore West (466), Niagara Falls (472) and North Tonawanda (473) rounded out the team scores.

Individually, Lew-Port’s Matt Petrosian was second with a 76, Lockport’s Desmond Stoll came in third with a 77 and Niagara Falls’ Greg Bullock and Pierce Terrance of Kenmore East tied for fourth at 79. Other state qualifiers were Mike Boss (Lew-Port, 80), Mike Davern (Kenmore East, 81), Brian Brink (Grand Island, 82), Alex Kammerer (Niagara-Wheatfield, 83) and Billy Lumadue (Niagara-Wheatfield, 83).

Boys Cross Country

Mike Feeney of Lockport finished first with a time of 18:20 in the Niagara Frontier League meet at Bond Lake No. 1. Brennon Cain, Bob Fogle and Wes Garver took spots two through four for the Lions (5-1 NFL). Joel Melcher finished fifth for the Lancers (1-4). Tom Zwick was the top finisher for West (1-4).

Grand Island 15, N-W 42Grand Island 18, Ken East 38N-W 28, Ken East 29

Derek Stacey took first place in 18:06 for the Vikings, who move to 6-0 in NFL action. GI’s Nick Masiello was second. Stephen Clapp of East (4-2) finished third. The Falcons’ split puts them at 3-2.

Niagara Falls 20, NT 43

Jared Quinn was the top finisher in a time of 18:11 for the Jacks at Beaver Island. The Wolverines (2-3 NFL) had the 2-3-4-5 finishers in Adam Zaczek, John Mosley, Darryl Laster and Tyler Bielec. NT falls to 0-5.

Wilson’s Kevin Hanes won the Niagara-Orleans race in 17:35. Newfane (5-1) was paced by the 2-3 finish of Nick Irr and Cody Burns as Roy-Hart’s Eddy Pfeil placed fourth. Wilson is now 1-4 while Roy-Hart is 2-3.

Albion’s Bryan Deibel won the rN-O ace in a time of 17:10. He was followed by the Barker quartet of Tyler Scheving, Mike Lantinen, Eric Benes and Ryan Lamb. Barker is now 5-0 in the N-O, Albion is 4-1 and Medina drops to 0-5.

Starpoint 17, Will. South 40Starpoint 20, Amherst 42

Zach Ahart (17:06), Kevin Carrigan, Tyler Dauria and Carl Daigler all ran well for Starpoint, which improved to 5-0 in ECIC III competition.

Alden 23, Tonawanda 38

East Aurora 20, Tonawanda 41

Jeremy Driscoll of Tonawanda had a time of 17:42 to finish in fourth place as THS moved to 3-3 in ECIC IV action.

Girls Cross Country

Maggie Russell won for Lockport in 21:43, followed by teammates Ally Bartkowiak, Emilee Petti, Chelsea Turton and Claire Whalen in Niagara Frontier League action at Bond Lake No. 1. Kelsey McGill finished fifth for Lew-Port (1-4 NFL) while Bronwen Leahey came in sixth for West (1-4). The Lady Lions are now 6-0.

Martina Tsembelis finished in first for GI, notching a time of 19:46 in the NFL meet. Also for the Vikings (4-1), Dominique DeGregorio placed second as Megan Karpie and Ayla Marino finished fourth and fifth, respectively. Stephanie Schmidt finished third for the Falcons (3-2). East drops to 0-5.

NT 24, Niagara Falls 31

Crystal Hailey won for the Falls at Beaver Island, registering a 22:21 in NFL action. North Tonawanda (3-2) had the next four top finishers, with April Maziarz, Amy Ohar, Emily Sieracki and Megan Helf all running well. The Wolverines fall to 2-3.

Newfane 15, Wilson 49Newfane 18, Roy-Hart 44

Newfane had a 1-2-4-5 finish with the efforts of Rachel Parker (20:14), Sarah Ziemba, Erin Hannah and Kayla Vochnewetch. Kelly Heuer placed third for Roy-Hart (0-4). Newfane improves to 5-0 while Wilson drops to 2-3.

Albion 27, Barker 28

Kaitlyn Klossner led the way for Albion with a winning time of 20:41 in the N-O meet. Teammate Grace Rich finished third for the 5-0 Purple Eagles. Barker (2-2) runners claimed the remaining top spots with Amber Sweeney placing second, Sarah White fourth and Deanna Platt fifth.

Starpoint 21, Will. South 40Amherst 26, Starpoint 29

Amy Cooper’s 19:45 gave her fourth place for Starpoint, while Livia Chase took the fifth spot for the Lady Spartans (4-1 ECIC III).

Paige Hill and Annie Draves of Tonawanda ran well.

Girls Volleyball

Ken West 3, Lew-Port 0

Taylor Lewandowski had 18 kills and five aces as the Blue Devils won the Niagara Frontier League match 25-18, 25-23, 25-12. Sarah Pray had 10 assists and four aces for the Blue Devils (9-4 overall, 8-4 NFL). For Lew-Port (2-12, 2-10), Kristine Ripson had 10 kills and Alex Lawson notched 18 assists.

N-W 3, Niagara Falls 0

Kailey Walck had 20 assists and two aces and Katie Gruarin added eight kills and five digs for the Falcons in the 25-23, 25-23, 25-13 NFL win. N-W is now 7-5 in the NFL. Quimeka Saunders had five kills and four blocks for the Wolverines (0-12).

Grand Island 3, NT 2

Chelsea Hall had 16 kills and five aces to help lead the Vikings in the 25-22, 15-25, 25-23, 21-25, 29-27 NFL upset. Maria Guidotti chipped in with 15 digs for the Vikings (7-6 overall, 6-6 NFL). Sarah Hansen had seven kills, seven assists, 10 digs, and six blocks for the Lady Jacks (12-1, 11-1). Lexi Akins had 25 digs.

Lockport 3, Ken East 0

Lea Sobieraski recorded 15 kills and two digs to lead the Lions to the NFL win with match scores of 25-18, 25-17, 25-14. Emma Sobieraski had four kills for Lockport (11-1 NFL). Becca Simmons led East (3-9) with 14 digs. Andrea Snitzer chipped in with 12 digs and Alex Dickson added 10 digs.

Albion 3, Akron 0

Paige Golden had 16 sevice points, 10 kills and eight aces to help the Purple Eagles improve to 10-1 in the Niagara-Orleans League with a 25-15, 25-21, 25-13 win. Brittany Hallett-Jonathan had five kills for Akron (5-7).

Barker 3, Medina 2

Kelsey Matuszak had 12 kills and 12 digs for the Mustsngs in the N-O loss. No stats were available for Barker. Both teams are 1-10.

Roy-Hart 3, Newfane 2

Bridget Shanahan had 21 kills, 12 service points and five blocks as the Lady Rams moved to 10-1 in the N-O. Newfane drops to 8-3.

N. Catholic 3, O’Hara 0

Coach Jerry Zasowski said it was a team effort as the Patriots moved to 1-11 in the Monsignor Martin after the 25-20, 26-24, 24-14 win. No information was available for O’Hara.

Boys Volleyball

N-W 3, Niagara Falls 0

Cliff Jacobs had 10 kills and 13 digs and Steve Barber added 19 assists and six aces as the Falcons moved to 7-3 in the Niagara Frontier League with a 25-18, 25-17, 25-23 win. Jack Hagerty added four kills and three blocks for the Falcons. Tim Drylewski had 15 assists, Michael Watson notched 16 service points and Brandon Joyce added 11 blocks for the Falls (1-9).

Grand Island 3, NT 0

Jonas Stalyga had 21 kills, two aces and three digs for the Vikings, who were 25-14, 25-19, 25-17 winners in an NFL matchup. Also for GI (8-2 NFL), Tyler Hinaman had 34 assists, four kills and six digs. Steve Bzibziak had eight kills for the Lumberjacks (5-5).

Ken West 3, Lew-Port 0

Evan Bullard had six kills and Kenny Johnston added four aces as West won the NFL matchup 25-6, 25-8, 25-12 to improve to 8-2. Connor Dunn played well for Lew-Port (0-10).

Lockport 3, Ken East 1

Mike Kojsza had 13 kills and Sean Smith chipped in with 12 kills for the Lions as they won the NFL contest 25-21, 22-25, 25-13, 25-16 to move to 8-2 on the year. No information was provided for the Bulldogs (3-7).

Boys Soccer

N-W 4, Niagara Falls 0

Ben Rung, Jeremey Hussey, Rocco Strangio and Sam Abate all had goals for the Falcons in the Niagara Frontier League win. John Netter had the shutout in net with three saves for N-W (8-3-2 overall, 7-3-1 NFL). The Falls fell to 1-11 in the league.

NT 3, Ken East 2 (2OT)

Nate Mackowski scored the game winner in the second overtime to lift the Jacks to the NFL win. Also for NT (9-4-1 overall, 7-4-1 NFL), Vinny DiVirgilio and John Clark scored. No information was available for East (6-5).

Lockport 7, Ken West 0

Matt McCoy had a hat trick and Chris Paradise made fives saves to earn his sixth shutout of the year as the Lions moved to 8-3 in the NFL. Alex Secord, Colton McCollum, Andrew Owen and Steve Weaver also scored for LHS. West dropped to 1-9-1 in the league.

Grand Island 3, Lew-Port 0

Jeremy Figler had his 10th shutout of the year as the Vikings picked up the NFL victory. Chris Stessing, Eric Breier and Joe Fischer scored one goal apece for GI (10-2-1 overall, 9-1-1 NFL). It was Stessing’s first career goal. Lew-Port fell to 3-6-2 in the league.

Akron 1, Wilson 0

Ian Brown scored six minutes into the game to help the Tigers clinch their third consecutive Niagara-Orleans League title. Sam Terrelli earned his 11th shutout of the year for Akron (8-0 N-O). Wilson drops to 5-3.

Medina 2, Newfane 0

Nick Schroeder scored both goals and Kevin Snyder earned the shutout as the Mustangs improved to 2-5-1 in the N-O. Newfane falls to 0-8.

Cheektowaga 2, Starpoint 0

Pablo Ordonez and Vincent Parisi scored for the Warriors, who moved to 7-0-2 in ECIC III. Starpoint drops to 5-2-2 in the league.

East Aurora 7, Tonawanda 1

Will Strehlow scored for the Warriors, who fall to 4-4 in ECIC IV (5-9 overall).

Junior Varsity

n Dave Glaser and Josh Graham scored to lift Starpoint (8-1) to a 2-0 win over Cheektowaga. Ricky Mullen recorded his fifth shutout.

Girls Soccer

Grand Island 5, Lew-Port 0

Jenna Raepple had two goals and one assist as the Vikings picked up the Niagara Frontier League win. Liz Lorence added a goal and three assists and both Jordan Dudish and Sara McNulty had a goal apiece. Kristin Wegrzyn had the shutout in net for the Vikings (12-1 overall, 11-0 NFL). Lew-Port fell to 5-6 in the league.

Ken West 2, Lockport 1

Charlotte Clark and Mattie Barker had a goal each to help the Blue Devils improve to 9-2 in the NFL. Olivia Kurbs scored for the Lady Lions (2-9-1).

NT 3, Ken East 2

Amanda Smyth had two goals and one assist as the Lady Jacks got the NFL win. Meghan Lipinoga added a goal and an assist and Abby Doyle stood out defensively for NT (9-5 overall, 8-4 NFL). No information was available for East (4-5-2).

East Aurora 2, Tonawanda 0

Christine Garrity and Kaitlin Knight played well for the Warriors, who dropped to 7-2 in ECIC IV play.

O’Hara 5, N. Catholic 2

Leah McDonell recorded four goals to lead the Hawks to the Monsignor Martin small schools win. Lea Stachura also tallied for O’Hara (2-7). No information was available for NC.

Girls Tennis

Ken East 4, NT 1

Melissa Willhoff and Celina Wozniak won their singles matches as East moved to 6-7 in the NFL. Nicole Kaczor won for NT (5-7) at second singles.

Lockport 4, Ken West 1

Miller Barmasse defeated Alex Filey in a close first singles match to help the Lady Lions finish 9-5 in the NFL. Allie and Molly Diamond won their first doubles match for the Blue Devils (8-3).

N-W 5, Lew-Port 0

Jessica Hastings, Lizzie Barrett and Brianna Siorita all won their singles matches for Wheatfield, which improved to 10-3 in the NFL. Lew-Port falls to 0-13.

Grand Island 5, Niagara Falls 0

Singles players Danielle Canazzi, Alex Buscaglia and Bree Rafferty combined to drop only three points as the Vikings moved to 12-1 in the NFL. NFHS drops to 1-12.

Starpoint 5, Springville 0

Meg Gildersleeve, Kelly Reinhardt and Sandy Spearin were singles winners for the Lady Spartans, who moved to 6-2 in ECIC III.

Girls Swimming

N-W 114, Lew-Port 30

Marissa Oakey set a new school record in the 200-yard freestyle as the Falcons moved to 4-1 in the Niagara Frontier League. Lauren Messer picked up her first career diving win for N-W. Chelsea O’Laughlin doubled (50 and 100 free) for Lew-Port (1-4).

Grand Island 109, Ken East 71

Stacy Cich won the 50 and 100 free to help the Vikings move to 1-4 in the NFL. Megan McInerney won the diving for GI. Alyssa Rogers won the 100 back and was on the winning 400 free relay for East (0-5).

Ken West 67, Niagara Falls 27

Lindsey Sagasta (50 free and 500 free) and Megan Sullivan (100 fly and 100 breast) were double individual winners for West, which swept all the events and improved to 5-0 in the NFL. The Falls dropped to 4-1.

Field Hockey

Wilson 1, Akron 0

Kiersten Simmons had the lone goal as the Lakewomen pulled the upset and improved to 4-7 in the Niagara-Orleans League. Erika Moltrup had the assist and Megan Buzzard earned the shutout. Akron falls to 9-2.

Barker 8, Newfane 0

Crystal Mott netted four goals for the Raiders, who moved to 11-0 in the N-O. Rachel Anderson earned the shutout. Newfane falls to 5-6.

Ken East 2, Medina 0

Courtney Mack and Alex Valentino scored in the second half as the Bulldogs moved to 4-7 in the N-O. Sam Attea earned the shutout. Medina drops to 5-5-1.

Roy-Hart 1, Ken West 0

Kristi Pilhorn scored the game’s only goals and Alyssa Reixinger earned the shutout as the Lady Rams moved to 4-7 in the N-O. West is 0-11.
