In the end, Starpoint’s futile comeback against undefeated Williamsville South fell just two inches short Saturday afternoon at Tudor Stadium. The Billies won the Class A North contest 28-26.
“It was another tough one that we were right there at the end,” Starpoint coach Al Cavagnaro said.
Trailing by 15 points in the fourth quarter, the Spartans scored two late touchdowns, including one with four seconds left in the game. Quarterback Joe Scibilia (7-for-19 passing, 85 yards; 10 rushes, 38 yards, TD) scored on a 2-yard run, but his two-point conversion run came up just inches short as the Spartans fell to 1-2 overall and 1-1 in Class A North. Senior tailback Brandon Bratek finished with 93 yards on 20 carries. He also caught a two-yard TD pass from Joe Delilio.
“We gave up a score on the first drive of the second half, but after that our defense played great,” Cavagnaro said.
Brandon Kopp scored on a 77-yard kickoff return for Starpoint. His twin brother Denver Kopp added an 8-yard TD run to open the Spartans’ fourth-quarter rally. Defensively, the Spartans were led by Corey Eggert’s 11 tackles, including three for a loss and one pass batted down.
South quarterback Joe Licata, the son of Starpoint High School principal Gil Licata, tossed a pair of TDs for the Billies (3-0, 2-0).
O’Hara 41, Walsh 0
The host Hawks’ win over Walsh was overshadowed by a knee injury to quarterback Angelo Sciandra.
“We don’t know much yet, but it doesn’t look good,” O’Hara coach Angelo Sciandra, the player’s father, said after the game.
The Hawks got a pair of touchdown runs from Shaquille Dudley — from 19 and 11 yards — and Rob Davis scored on a 35-yard run as the Hawks (2-1 overall) stayed unbeaten in Monsignor Martin League A play at 2-0. Klyde Bynum had a 43-yard touchdown run and Sciandra threw for a pair of touchdown passes before leaving with his injury.
Brandon Lyles had 10 tackles and a forced fumble for the Hawks. Walsh dropped to 0-3, 0-2.
St. Joe’s 36, St. Mary’s 23
Tunde Babarinsa carried the ball eight times for 116 yards and a touchdown and then added six completions for 59 yards to help the Maruders to the non-league win. Matt Rosenhahn added both a rushing and passing TD for St. Joe’s (1-2 overall), which scored 22 points in the second quarter. Rosenhahn was 7-of-8 for 109 yards, while Mark Emerson had five catches for 92 yards and a score. Emerson and Sean Mulhern led the defense with eight stops apiece. Jesse Kelso, the son of former Buffalo Bills safety Mark Kelso, returned a fumble 83 yards for a TD for the Lancers (2-1).
Alden 57, Newfane 0
Newfane was no match for Class B North-leading Alden as Willie Peel scored twice and Tyler Stoldt added a TD pass and three two-point conversion passes. Also for Alden (3-0 overall, 3-0 Class B North), Derek Delzer added a 70-yard interception return for a touchdown.
Jordan Hogan had two catches and led the Panthers (0-3, 0-3 B North) on defense with six tackles, but there were few positives for Newfane.
“They’re a good team and they pushed us around,” Panthers coach Vic Thibault said. “We gave it all that we had, but we had a lot of breakdowns due to inexperience.”
Notre Dame 37, Barker 6
Mike Pratt rushed for three touchdowns as the Fighting Irish picked up the Section V Genessee Region League road win. For Barker (1-2 overall, 1-2 GRL), Ray Paul scored the lone TD. Greg Brown added 14 carries for 44 yards along with three catches for 27 yards, while the defense was led by Tony Porter’s 13 tackles. Jake Greenwald chipped in with 11 tackles and a blocked field goal attempt and Josh Sonberg had 10 tackles, including a sack.
Girls Soccer
Barker 1, Buff. Sem. 1
Emily Gendrue scored the lone goal for the Lady Raiders in the consolation game of the Newfane Tournament. The game was shortened due to an injury. Vanessa Beradi and Sara Sullivan split the goaltending duties for Barker (0-5-1 overall). No information was available for Buffalo Seminary.
N-W 4, Niagara Catholic 0
Danielle Dworzanski, Caitlin Attfield, Victoria Ayers and Ally Rung scored for the Falcons in the non-league win. Michelle Maggard had the shutout for N-W (4-4-1 overall). No information was available for NC.
Lew-Port 7, Niagara Falls 2
Jenna Van Dusen had a hat trick as the Lancers picked up the Niagara Frontier League win. Also for Lew-Port (6-2 overall, 4-2 NFL), Haley Besaw had a pair of tallies and both Sarah Winter and Tiegan Monteleone scored. For the Falls (2-8, 0-6), Ameliah Martinez and Darcie Rosinski scored with Joanna Monaco assisting on both goals.
Boys Soccer
Lew-Port 3, Wilson 1
Scott Falla, Zach Rougeux and Joseph Ireland scored for the Lancers during their win on the second day of the annual Wilson Cup Tournament. The Lancers (4-2-2 overall) went 2-0 at the event. For Wilson (3-4), Odane Todd scored.
East Aurora 3, Newfane 0
Barry Hunt had two goals and Josh Matter added the final tally as the Blue Devils pitched a shutout on day two of the annual Wilson Cup Tournament. The Blue Devils won the championship on goal differential. The Panthers drop to 3-4 overall.
N-W 4, Roy-Hart 1
Dillon Fedak, Christian Warchocki, Vinnie Zuccari and Derek Kratts scored for the Falcons in the non-league win. N-W improved to 4-2-3 overall. Tim Mullen scored for the Rams (1-7).

In the Division III (small schools) portion of the meet, the Wilson girls took first place thanks in large part to the efforts of their top five finishers: Amber Lehman (21 minutes, 26 seconds), Kari Kopchick (22:49), Beth Paduano (23:51), Alaina Kopchick (23:53) and Savannah King (24:35). Barker was second and Cleveland Hill came in third.
On the boys side, Wilson took third behind the performances of: Kevin Hanes (17:07), Mike Reubens (18:53), Liam Bull (20:22), Ben Truesdell (20:47) and R.J. Seager (22:23). Barker was first, followed by Royalton-Hartland.
No additional information was provided by race or team officials.
East Aurora Invite
Zach Ahart placed 13th overall in a time of 16:18 to help Starpoint to a 12th-place finish at the 36-team event. Rounding out the Spartans’ top five was: Cam Laderer (50th, 18:00), Steve Carnduff (52nd, 18:03), Pat Freemen (54th, 18:11) and Kevin Carrigan (57th, 18:16).
On the girls side, Starpoint had an incomplete score due to injuries, but Lauren Scarupa did finish 15th overall. Her time was 19:10. Rounding out the Lady Spartans’ top three was: Courtney Laderer (45th, 20:27) and Cassie Weldon (54th, 20:45).
