H.S. ROUNDUP (9/17/08): Frauen nets hat trick for Wilson

Senior Lindsay Frauen had a hat trick to lead Wilson to a 4-0 Niagara-Orleans League girls soccer win over Barker Wednesday.
Also for the Lakewomen (5-5 overall 3-2 N-O), sophomore Molly Curry scored and goalkeepers Katie Kiely and Kim Daunce shared the shutout. The Lady Raiders dropped to 0-4 in the league.
Medina 1, Roy-Hart 0
Megan McCann netted the lone goal of the game off a pass from Alisha Newman 15 minutes into the first half to help Medina to the win. Brittany Merritt made six saves to earn the shutout for the Mustangs (3-2 N-O). Samantha Smith made a dozen saves in goal for Roy-Hart (0-5).
Albion 2, Akron 0
Taylor Armstrong had a goal and an assist and Courtney Lusk also scored as the Purple Eagles improved to 5-0 in the N-O. Akron fell to 4-1.
Alden 2, Tonawanda 1 (OT)
Brittany Czajka netted both goals for Alden, which improved to 3-0 in ECIC IV action. Tara Radkiewicz netted her fourth goal of the season for the Warriors (3-3-1 overall, 2-2-1 ECIC IV). Tonawanda senior goalkeeper Courtney Cellotto made a dozen saves in a losing effort.
St. Mary’s 7, N.Catholic 0
Renee Polka, Jen McCune and Emily Bird played well, according to coach Brian Harrison, but the Patriots fell to 0-2 in the Monsignor Martin Athletic Association small schools division. No additional information was available.
Boys Soccer
Starpoint 2, Amherst 1
Senior Hamilton Karczewski scored his fourth game-winning goal of the season to lift the Spartans over the Tigers in ECIC III action. Jack Barrick of Amherst (3-1-2 ECIC III) struck first, but Rich Barrett followed for the Spartans with a goal of his own. Tim Clark racked up his sixth win of the season, stopping a crucial penalty shot in the first half for Starpoint (6-2 overall, 4-0 ECIC III).
Eden 2, Tonawanda 0
Ed Sarcione and John Flowers both scored in the second half to help the Raiders improve to 3-2 in ECIC IV. For THS (1-6 overall, 1-3 ECIC IV), Matt Pohzehl hit the crossbar on a shot in the first half and defender Muana Kpaka played well.
Junior Varsity
n Brian Hardwick scored for THS in a 4-1 loss to Eden.
Golf
N-Wheatfield 239, NT 251
At Deerwood, Carl Graff picked up medalist honors with a 38 as the Falcons picked up a key Niagara Frontier League golf win. Alex Cammerer and Nick Ross each added 39s and Alex Buerger had a 40 for N-W (5-2 NFL). Dan Breloff had a 39 and Max Mistrisner added a 41 for NT (1-5).
Lockport 260, Lew-Port 263
Ryan Neidrauer and Baxter Sukdolak each shot a 42 as the Lions (5-1 NFL) knocked the Lancers from the ranks of the unbeatens in NFL play at Niagara Frontier Country Club. Kyle Donovan had a 42 for Lew-Port (6-1).
Grand Island 253, N.Falls 265
In NFL action at River Oaks, Korey DiMatteo, John Osberg and Alex Fry all shot 41s for the Vikings (3-3 NFL). The match medalist with a two-over-par 38 was T.J. Bullock of Niagara Falls (2-4 NFL). Also for the Wolverines, Greg Bullock carded a 41.
Ken East 256, Ken West 272
At Sheridan, co-medalists Pierce Terrance and Anthony Coppola each shot two-over 38s to help the Bulldogs to the NFL win. James Schultz added a 42 for East (3-3 NFL). Matt Kieta had a 44 for West (0-6).
Newfane 202, Wilson 244
At Oak Run, medalist Collin Flagler fired a three-over 38 to help the Panthers win the battle of Niagara-Orleans League unbeatens. Also for the Panthers (6-0 N-O), Erik Taheri shot a 39, John Lipa had a 40 and Bill Cockayne added a 42. Andy Carroll had a 43 and Ryan Clark chipped in with a 46 for the Lakemen (4-1-1).
Akron 218, Albion 246
In N-O action at Hickory Ridge, Al Short earned medalist honors with a 38 for Akron (4-1-1 N-O). For Albion (1-4-1), Jon Forder had a 47.
Medina 256, Barker 263
In N-O action at Niagara-Orleans Country Club, Brad Zacher took medalist honors with a 40 and Ethan Poler added a 46 for Medina. (3-3 N-O). Tommy Budde had a 46 for Barker (1-4-1).
Starpoint 300, Tonawanda 374
In ECIC North small schools action at Evergreen, medalist Nick Zaccarella of Starpoint shot a two-over-par 37. Also for the Spartans (3-0 ECIC), Dave Ruta fired a 39, Kyle Griffin carded a 42 and Natalie Whitman added a 44. For the Warriors (0-5 ECIC), Geoff Nowakowski shot a 49.
Nichols 24, O’Hara 0
Medalist Chris Stegemann of Nichols fired an even-par 36 at the Country Club of Buffalo to lead the Vikings (5-0 MMAA) to the Monsignor Martin win. Matt Mullin and Kevin Swanson shot well for O’Hara (0-4), according to head coach John Dennis.
Girls Tennis
Ken West 3, Lockport 2
Allie Diamond and Avery Fisher won a tight match at first doubles to help the host Blue Devils pick up the Niagara Frontier League win. Tara Lemen and Alex Filey won singles matches for West (5-2 NFL). Miller Barmasse was a winner at first singles for the Lady Lions (4-3).
N-W 5, Lew-Port 0
First singles star Angela Hastings and the first doubles tandem of Kelsey Walck and Emily Owens both improved to 7-0 this season as N-W moved to 6-1 in NFL action. Lew-Port dropped to 0-7.
Grand Island 4, N.Falls 1
The Vikings improved to 4-3 in the NFL with wins at second and third singles respectively from Alex Buscaglia and Kelsey Mash. Winning at first singles for Niagara Falls (2-5) was Alexis Schmidtke .
Ken East 4, NT 1
Despite a shoulder injury, Melissa Willhoff won a hard-fought first singles match to help the Bulldogs improve to to 6-1 in the NFL. The second doubles team of Kerrie O’Keeffe and Katie Anderson also won a three-setter for East. Brianna Larson won at second singles for NT (2-5).
Starpoint 5, Maryvale 0
The singles trio of Jenna Maldiner, Chloe Withiam-Leitch and Meg Gildersleeve dropped only one point to help the Lady Spartans improve to 2-1 in ECIC III. Maryvale dropped to 0-3.
JFK 3, Tonawanda 2
Courtney Smith handed Meghan Kossow her first loss of the season as the Bears (1-2 ECIC IV) picked up the ECIC IV win. For THS (1-2), Tricia Sturkler won a tight match at third singles.
Boys Volleyball
Grand Island 3, NT 0
The visiting Vikings scored a big Niagara Frontier League win, as Jonas Stalyga led the way with 11 kills, including five in the third game of a 25-19, 25-21, 25-18 win. Senior Scott Holler had eight kills and six aces with a solid jump serve for GI (4-1 NFL). Tyler Hinaman had 37 assists in the win. Vinnie Libroia led NT (2-3) with eight kills. Kevin Fretthold added five kills for the Lumberjacks.
St. Joe’s 3, N-Wheatfield 1
Matt Dyrek had 18 kills as the Maruaders won the non-league match, 25-23, 25-21, 24-26, 25-21. Collin Gordon added seven kills and 12 blocks and Eddie Pyszczynski chipped in with 12 kills for St. Joe’s (4-0 overall). For N-W (3-2), Ben Woodbury had 16 kills, Brian Almendinger added 17 digs, Cliff Jacobs had five kills and Lucas Kowalczyk chipped in with 29 assists.
Girls Volleyball
NT 3, Grand Island 0
NT’s Joanna Fretthold had eight kills and six blocks as the Lady Jacks defeated the Vikings 25-20, 28-26, 25-19 in NFL action. Also for NT (5-2 overall, 4-1 NFL), Delaney Laper had 10 kills and nine digs, Lauren Metzger added 15 digs. For GI (3-3, 3-2), Lexi Reapple had eight kills and Chelsea Hall added seven kills.
Field Hockey
Starpoint 2, Sweet Home 1
Tori Pellish and Melinda Reeb netted goals for the Lady Spartans in Wednesday’s ECIC Interdivision win. Amee Larson played a strong defensive game for Starpoint (1-2-3 overall). Heather Kolbas found the net for the Panthers (1-4-1).
