HS ROUNDUP (SEPT. 5): GI girls spikers win three-set thriller
Staff Report
Mary Scherrer and Chelsea Hall combined for 21 kills as Grand Island nipped Kenmore East, 16-25, 25-21, 25-21, 21-25, 25-13 in Niagara Frontier League girls volleyball Thursday night. Also for GI (1-0 overall, 1-0 NFL), Susan Pioli had seven kills and 19 assists.
Alex Dickson led the Bulldogs (0-1, 0-1) with nine kills. Liz Lawless was 20-for-24 serving.
N. Tonawanda 3, Lew-Port 0
Jordan Tylec recorded nine aces and 16 assists as the Lady Jacks won their Niagara Frontier League opener, 25-10, 25-19, 25-22. Also for NT (2-1 overall, 1-0 NFL), Joanna Fretthold had nine kills and Delaney Laper added seven kills and six digs. Shannon Lawson picked up three aces for the Lancers (0-1, 0-1).
Lockport 3, Niagara Falls 0
Lea Sobieraski, Erin Miller and Amy Johnson each had nine kills as the Lady Lions won their NFL opener, 25-17, 25-8, 25-10. Hannah Hall added 10 digs for LHS (3-0 overall, 1-0 NFL). Michelle Granieri and Courtney Summers passed well for NFHS (0-1, 0-1).
Akron 3, Wilson 0
Jessica Curry and Jessica Senek each had nine kills, but the Lakewomen dropped a five-set Niagara-Orleans League heartbreaker, 25-15, 30-28, 21-25, 20-25, 25-23. Wilson dropped to 0-2 overall and 0-1 in the league, while Akron moved to 1-0. No stats were available for the Tigers.
Albion 3, Medina 0
Paige Golden had six kills as the Purple Eagles won their Niagara-Orleans League opener, 25-13, 25-10, 25-8. Lisa Bierderman had 13 assists and three kills and Casey Button chipped in with five kills for Albion (1-0 N-O). Kelly Jo Pritchard had five kills and Marie Zimmerman added 10 assists for Medina (0-1).
Roy-Hart 3, Barker 0
Bridget Shanahan had 15 kills and four blocks to lift the Lady Rams to a 25-9, 25-11, 25-10 N-O win. Ashley Scrinzi added 12 kills, 13 service points and four aces, Stephanie Wood had 11 service points and fives, Molly McEvoy chipped in with 11 service points, 10 assists and three aces and Michelle Quackenbush had four aces for Roy-Hart (1-0 N-O). Barker dropped to 0-2, 0-1.
Hutch-Tech 3, N. Catholic 0
Jolene Lambert had 10 service points, three kills and three digs, but the Patriots fell in non-league action, 25-18, 25-18, 25-18. Also for NC (0-2 overall), Cory Catanese had five service points and three kills and Katrina Crossley had seven service points. Hutch-Tech improved to 1-1.
Boys Volleyball
Ken East 3, N-Wheatfield 2
Kevin Whitehead had 13 kills as the Bulldogs won a key Niagara Frontier League match, 25-23, 25-21, 25-22. Scott Whitehead added six kills and Anthony Bagarozzi had 20 assists for East (2-0 NFL). For N-W (1-1), Ben Woodbury picked up 11 kills and Kyle Henry had eight kills.
Ken West 3, N. Tonawanda 2
Steven Oswald had 16 kills and Vinnie Libroia added 14 kills and five blocks for North Tonawanda as it dropped a thrilling five-set NFL match, 23-25, 23-25, 27-25, 25-17, 25-22. John McCarthy added 43 assists for the Jacks (1-1 NFL), while no stats were reported for West (1-1).
Girls Soccer
Lew-Port 2, Holy Angels 0
Haley Besaw had a goal and an assist as the Lancers won in the opening round of the annual Lewiston-Porter Cup Tournament at Elia Stadium. Jenna Van Dusen also scored, while Lindsay Carr made five saves for the shutout and Amy Roemer picked up an assist for Lew-Port (2-0-0 overall). The Lancers will play Wilson in the championship game at 1:30 p.m. Saturday. No information was available for Holy Angels.
Wilson 5, Maryvale 0
Molly Curry netted four goals as the Lakewomen rolled past the Flyers in the opening round of the annual Lewiston-Porter Cup Tournament. Jess Foster had a goal and two assists and Katie Kiely made four saves in goal for the shutout for Wilson (1-1-0 overall). Maryvale drops to 0-2.
Ken West 5, Hamburg 0
Caitlyn Donahue, Lexi Panepinto, Jenna Rickan, Jamie Eichinger, Cristina Ippolito each had a goal as the Blue Devils opened their season with a non-league win. Also for West (1-0 overall), Jenna Panepinto had two assists and Melissa Pawlowski made three saves in net for the shutout. The Bulldogs fell to 0-1.
Holland 6, Tonawanda 1
Meagan Moore had the lone goal for the Warriors in an ECIC IV loss. Catie Pfeiffer had four goals for the Dutchwomen. Also for THS (0-1 overall, 0-1 ECIC IV), Kaitlyn Moore played well.
Boys Soccer
N-Wheatfield 1, Lew-Port 1
Ben Rung scored off Christian Warchocki’s cornere kick with just under 30 minutes left in the second half to help the Falcons (0-0-2 overall, 0-0-1 NFL) earn the tie in Niagara Frontier League action. Jake Wasneechak scored on a pass from Mike Curatolo for the Lancers (2-0-1, 0-0-1). Neither team had more than a handful of scoring opportunities, N-W coach John Coulter said.
Canisius 2, Grand Island 1
Kolby Banker scored on a pass from Jordan Gibson with two minutes left, but it wasn’t enough for the Vikings in the opening round of the Amherst Tournament. Nick Southard and Connor Wingerter scored for the Crusaders (1-0 overall). GI (1-2-0) will play the host Tigers in the consolation game of the event at noon Saturday.
Junior Varsity
n Alex Vranic, Galeb Ammar and Francesco Strangio scored fopr N-W in a 3-2 win over Lew-Port. Rob Minicucci and Rich Minicucci scored for Lew-Port.
Golf
Lew-Port 235, Kenmore East 257
Matt Petrosian earned medalist honors with an even-par 36 at Brighton Golf Course to lead the Lancers to the Niagara Frontoer League win. Also for Lew-Port (2-0 NFL), Michael Boss and Anthony DiBacco each carded a 38. For East (1-1), Pierce Terrance led the way with a 37, followed by Anthony Coppola’s 40.
Wilson 2, Albion 0
Wilson senior Andy Carroll took medalist honors with a 39 at Hickory Ridge as the Lakemen opened their Niagara-Orleans League schedule with a win, 247-269. Jake Rohring carded a 48 for Wilson (1-0 N-O). For Albion (0-1), Peter Gaylord had a 49.
Akron 2, Medina 0
Eli Conti took medalist honors with a 37 and Alex Short carded a 42 for Akron (1-0 N-O), which knocked off the five-time defending N-O champs, 224-249. Ethan Poler shot 43 and Brad Zacher had a 46 for Medina (0-1).
Newfane 2, Roy-Hart 0
Colin Flagler and Bill Cockanne shared medalist honors with 39s at Oak Run Golf Club in N-O play. Total strokes were not reported. John Lipa added a 41 for the Panthers (1-0 N-O) and Corey Callaghan was low scorer for Roy-Hart (0-1) with a 40.
Field Hockey
Akron 3, Wilson 1
Molly DeTine, Anna Frey and Becky Hopkins took turns scoring the goals for the Tigers, who moved to 2-0 in Niagara-Orleans League play with the win. Alexandria Grace scored the goal for Wilson (0-1-1).
Medina 1, Newfane 0 (OT)
Chasity Chinn scored the game-winner four minutes into overtime for the Mustangs in N-O action. Bailey Colonna had the assist and Cassie Lyons earned the shutout in goal for Medina (2-0 N-O). The loss drops Newfane to 0-1-1.
Roy-Hart 2, Ken East 1
Brittany Burg and Christine Badhorn scored for the Lady Rams in their N-O win. Liz DeWaters and Grace McPartland picked up assists for Roy-Hart (1-1 N-O). Kristin Deschenes scored for the Bulldogs (0-2).
Barker 14, Ken West 0
Crystal Mott scored a school record-tying seven goals to spark the Lady Raiders to the big N-O win. Also for Barker (2-0 N-O), Alyssa Hare had a hat trick and both Rebecca Quackenbush and Sienna Dear had a pair of tallies. The Blue Devils fell to 0-2.
