AREA ROUNDUP (July 23): Van Schaik Day set for Aug. 13
The sixth annual Carolyn Van Schaik Memorial Golf Tournament will be held on Aug. 13 at Hyde Park Golf Course. The day has also been proclaimed Carolyn Van Schaik Day in the City of Niagara Falls by Mayor Paul Dyster.
A shotgun start to the outing, which was previously called the Main Street Business & Professional Association Golf Tournament, is scheduled for noon on the North 18 with a congeniality hour set for 5:30 p.m. and dinner to follow at Niagara University’s Clet Hall. The cost is $110 per golfer and includes golf, cart, lunch at the turn, golf shirt, congeniality hour, dinner and prizes. The cost is $90 for Hyde Park season pass holders. A two-year car lease compliments of David Chevrolet will also be available as a hole-in-one prize.
There are 120 spots available in the event, which benefits the continued revitilization of Main Street and Carolyn House. For more information or to register, call 285-1318.
BASKETBALL
NC Varsity Summer League
Lewiston-Porter remained unbeaten at the midway point of the summer with a 69-29 win over Royalton-Hartland. Robby Seyler had 24 points, Marc Morreale added 11 and James Butera and Anthony Deal split 20 for the Lancers. Corey Callaghan had 12 markers for the Rams.
• Niagara-Wheatfield nipped formerly unbeaten Wilson, 54-49, as Carl Graff had 20 points. Four other Falcons had six points each. The Lakemen, who were playing without leading scorer Ethan Baker, were led by Brennan Moxham’s 20 points and John Vincent’s 11.
• Niagara Catholic joined Wilson at 3-1 after using a big second half to beat Tonawanda 66-44. Lorenzo Joseph sparked the NC attack with 21 points, while Mike Volpe helped with 13. Scott Foster cashed in five three-pointers to lead THS with 17 points. Zack Snyder and Kyle Schroeder split 20 more for the Warriors.
• Matt Harrington had 11 points as Starpoint edged Newfane 35-33. Jordan Hogan had all 11 of his points in the second half for the Panthers.
NC JV Summer League
The host Patriots stand atop the standings after a 42-35 win over an improving Tonawanda squad. Patrick Stevens and Mark Nearhood each had 12 for NC, while Schroeder led THS with 23 points.
• Starpoint tasted defeat for the first time in overtime thanks to the stellar guard play of Wilson’s Connor Lynch and Tyler Martin. The backcourt duo combined for 29 points as the Lakemen won, 50-47. Alex Ranke had 11 and Tyler Sieczkarek had 10 for the Spartans.
• Lew-Port overcame an eight-point haltime deficit to get by Tonawanda 53-45. THS was playing its second straight contest. Aaron Stephens had 21 points for the Lancers and teammates Brandon Ventry and Dylan Kruger combined for 22 more. Schroder again led the Warriors with 27 points, while Steven Stitch kicked in 13 more in the loss.
SOFTBALL
Cayuga Majors Playoffs
Rachel Sparks had two hits and two RBIs as the Wegmans Braves beat the Rediform Federal Credit Union Mets 7-1. Breanna Stone added two hits and an RBI and Caitlyn Bos had an RBI single in the win. Rachel Cheff picked up the win in the circle. For the Mets, Marissa Watroba had a double and scored the lone run. Caitlyn Mundy was good defensively.
Town of Niagara Juniors
Chelsea Lowman had two hits and an RBI and picked up the win in the circle as the LaSalle Sportsman’s Club Flames beat the Ken Currie Motors Heaters 10-5. Hannah Schul added a two-run single and Amanda Gabrielson had two hits and an RBI. Toni LaMantia had three hits and an RBI for the Heaters.
• Laura Crooks and Jessica Crooks each had two hits and three RBIs as the Flames knocked off the Heaters in game two of a doubleheader, 14-3. Lowman again got the win, while adding an RBI single. For the Heaters, Kali Zelakiewicz had an RBI single.
Town of Niagara Majors
Carrie Hillman had four hits and three RBIs to lead the Capitol Cleaners Rockettes to a 14-5 victory over the Jose’s Collision Firecrackers. Alyssa Yanulevrich added three hits and two RBIs, Brionnah Robins had five hits and an RBI and Alivia Ciocoo chipped in with four hits and an RBI. Alyssa Renko had four hits and two RBIs for the Firecrackers.
BASEBALL
Greater Niagara Seniors
Michael Celeste had a pair of RBI singles as the Latina Foods Yankees of Lewiston beat the Lewiston Keegena Chrispractic Astros 8-2 at Washuta Park. Tyler Rueter added two hits and Reid Okoniewski had an RBI. Alex Nowocien and Collin Okoniewski combined on a two-hitter with eight strikeouts for the Yankees. Joe Meyers had an RBI double, while Kris Meyers and Brandon Washburn singled for the Astros.
SOCCER
U12 Boys Travel
Kyle Woods had a hat trick as the Niagara PAL Eagles beat the Grand island Hawks 8-3 in Buffalo and Western New York Junior Travel League action at Grand Island’ Veteran’s Park. Axel James and Austin Sauer added tw goals apiece and Nathan Regester also scored. Mike Hathaway had two assists and Trevor Trimper, Navtej Pandher, Connor McArdle, Rob Kunkel and Anthony Johnson all had one helper. The Eagles improved to 6-5. No information was made available for GI.
