AREA ROUNDUP (July 17): Dooher nets ace at Niagara Frontier CC
George Dooher of Lewiston recorded his second career hole-in-one Tuesday at Niagara Frontier Country Club. Dooher, who has been golfing for 60 years, used a 7-iron on the 115-yard 11th hole. The ace was witnessed by John Dooher.
Power to help local youth players Friday
The Niagara Power are scheduled to hold an open practice at the Sandlot Academy of Western New York, 635 Campbell Boulevard, East Amherst, on Friday. Power players and coaches will provide instruction on batting, fielding and pitching to youngsters. Detroit Tigers draft pick has local ties
The son of former Youngstown resident Mary Stepien Gilman, and grandson of Chester Stepien and the late Mary Stepien, was drafted by the Detroit Tigers in the 36th round of last month’s Major League Baseball entry draft. Steve Gilman, 22, of Annandale, N.J. is currently pitching for
thet Oneonta Tigers of the Class A New York Penn League. He’s a recent graduate of Yale University. The Timber Rattlers and Knights each advanced in the Lewiston Starters baseball playoffs with recent victories at Kiwanis Park.
BASEBALL
Rattlers, Knights advance
Jacob Dolan had a double and a triple among his four hits, scored four runs and knocked in six more as the Rattlers beat the Lookouts 14-2. Tanner Holthouse also had four hits, including two home runs and a triple, and six RBIs.
Joey Romero had three hits and three runs scored for the Rattlers and Ty Slaugenhaut stood out defensively for at first base.
Anthony Dragone had a triple and two singles to lead the Knights over the Riverdogs 14-3. Brendan Perreault had four hits, while Shane Kowalski, Matt Carden, Steve Mansour, Nick Shotwell and Matt Clarkson all had three hits. Anthony Coty had a double and a triple.
Jack Dillons had two hits for the Lookouts. Theo Noah had two hits for the Riverdogs.
Cayuga Minors Playoffs
Anthony Churpita went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and struck out eight batters as the Jose’s Collision Dodgers won 13-3. Brian Hutchinson went 3-for-3 with three runs scored and three RBIs. Mike Orsi went 2-for-2 with an RBI and struck out six batters. Anthony Hoopsick went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI.
Lewiston Minors
The Whitman and Manente Orthodontic Bulls ended the season on a good note, beating the Berard Law Redwings 5-4. Joe Lucchetti, Nathan Waterstram, Mike Ogden, Vince Galie and Sonny Butski combined to strike out 11 batters. Sean Foley had three hits, while Waterstram had a double and a single.
Town of Niagara Majors
Jacob Smith had a triple and double among his four hits, scored five times and knocked in three more runs as the LaFarge Orioles beat the Ange’s Scrap Iron Blue Jays 20-4. Winning pitcher John McClasey struck out seven and helped his own cause with three hits, including a double, and five runs scored. Jack Travers also scored five runs, counting two triples and a double among his three hits, and notched three RBIs. Kyle Bennett had four RBIs and three hits, including two triples and a double.
Joey Posetti had three hits for the Jays while Cory Gatto had two hits and two RBIs.
• Joe Ayers struck out 11 batters over four innings, hit two home runs, a triple and a double, and knocked in five runs to lift the Bucky’s Barber Shop Yankees over the Janese’s Pizza Indians 23-2. Anthony Tardibuono had three extra-base hits and three RBIs, Anthony Merante had three hits and three RBIs, and Eric Schmidt had two hits and two RBIs.
Crae Contangelo and Joey Ventresca scored the Indians’ runs.
Hyde Park Minors
DeMarco Baines had two hits, including a double, and three RBIs as the Tops Tigers beat the Porky’s Astros 17-13. Winning pitcher Carlos Hernandez also knocked in two runs, as did Jaylin Smith.
Phillip Krueppel had a triple, a double and four RBIs.
• Nick Krupp had 17 strikeouts as the Wiseguys Pizzeria Yankees won 2-1 over Felicetti Concrete A’s. William McMillen knocked in both runs for the Yankees.
Despite the loss, Robert Newbury trumped Krupp with 18 Ks. He also hit a home run.
SOFTBALL
Travel Playoffs
Nikki Krafts hit a two-run double in the top of the fifth to help the Cayuga Gamblers Silver team returned to the finals for the second year in a row by beat the Amherst Lightning Gold team 6-4. Ali Gibson, Bethany Beutel and Nicole Ferrell combined for the pitching win. Holly Conte had a pinch-hit two-run single in the bottom of the sixth.
Cayuga Majors
Kayla Greenwalt hit a grand slam in the bottom of the fourth to lead the Rediform Federal Credit Union Mets to a 9-4 victory over the Z-Tech Marlins. Francesca Gariano had two hits and an RBI and six put-outs playing shortstop. Alyssa Shelton contributed three runs and Maria Sciarrino had an RBI and scored twice.
For the Marlins, Aly Mayes had two hits and scored twice while Felicia Chandler notched two hits.
GOLF
Niagara Frontier CC
Kim Patterson and Sandy Pembleton were the overall champions of the 2008 Men’s Invitational, with a net score of 63-64-60-187 over three rounds.
Vern Jacobs and Joe Dunlop were the gross champions, posting 68-73-70.
Angelo Ventresca and Dom Ventresca were recognized for being “most honest,” while flight championships went to Pete Lovering and Mark Becker, Angelo Onevelo and Mike Onevelo, Jim Walker and Jim Walker Jr., and Jay Raepple and Stan Pietras.
• Elizabeth Sherer won the A flight with a net 70 in the 18-hole weekly Wednesday ladies league. Kathy Penale led the Bs with 81, and June Helfrick took the C flight with 76. Wes Greemon and Jennie Myzdian took low-putt honors.
• Nancy Riccio had a net 36 to win the A flight in the Tuesday nine-hole ladies league. Penale won the B flight with 32 and Margaret Mann had 33 to top the Cs.
Shawnee CC
Mary VeRost won the A flight with a net 37 in the Tuesday morning ladies league. Margo Smith took the B flight with 32, Jane Donovan won the C flight with 29 and Rita Howard led the Ds with 44.
Hyde Park
Betty Sdao shot 77 to take the A flight in the Tuesday 18-hole ladies league. Barbara Fallon had an 84 to lead the Bs and Marie Kandt won the C flight with 86. Lee Adriatico, Mary Ann Storr, Dorothy Gara and Angela Ruggiero won weekly titles. Adriatico, May Jowdy and Helen Panza took low-putt honors.

Niagara PAL Wolverines (Curt Ventresca and Matt Thompson) beat Wilson High (Kyle Bogdan and Caleb Rohring) 6-0, 6-4, and Niagara University (Pete Butera and Burt Thompson) 6-2, 6-4. Unifrax (Eric Scheffler and Les Sniezek) defeated Integrated Controls USA (Dean Poulos and Jack Cwierly) 6-0, 6-1. Niagara University (Eric Garcia and Kendra Daigler) beat Judi’s Lounge (Tom Fallon and Scott Sobiegray) 6-3, 6-1. Deveaux Sports Coalition (Rob Udy and Mark Santangelo) beat Integrated Controls USA 6-2, 6-0. Deveaux Sports Coalition, Judi’s Lounge and Unifrax all won matches by forfeit.
