AREA ROUNDUP (July 16): Cyclones finish second at tourney

The Niagara Falls Cyclones 16-and-under travel baseball team took second place this past weekend at the annual Mentor (Ohio) Firecracker Tournament. The Falls opened the event with a 13-4 win over the Concord (Ohio) Seminoles as Vinnie Pericelli had four hits. Tom Martineau (Niagara Falls) added three hits and had a no-hitter going for 5 1/3 innings. In game two, the Cyclones downed the Chili (N.Y.) Cardinals 12-6 as Mike Wagner had three hits and two RBIs and gave up only three runs over 5 2/3 innings on the hill. Marcus Cavarello added two hits and three RBIs. In the final contest of pool play, Niagara Falls topped the Valley (Ohio) Sting 18-4 behind a home run and three RBIs off the bat of Adam Grace (Niagara Falls). Wagner added three hits and two RBIs, while Lorne Shotwell and Mike Schlee chipped in with three RBIs apiece. Dan Gambino allowed only three runs over four innings of work to get the win on the hill.

In the semifinals, Schlee pitched a complete-game shutout, allowing seven hits and striking out five as the Falls beat Shaker Heights (Ohio) 10-0. Pericelli and Cavarello each had three hits, while Grace, Schlee and Reese Bedient (Niagara-Wheatfield) added two hits and two RBIs apiece. In the title game, though, the Cyclones would manage only four hits and fall to the host Mentor (Ohio) Cardinals 6-1. Bedient had a pair of hits and Grace added a hit and the lone RBI. For the tourney, the Cyclones outscored their opponents 54-20.

9U Travel

The Steve’s Heating and Cooling Lewiston Lancers went 2-2 this past weekend at the Lancers Classic. In game one, Dominic Dragone and Kyle Ullery each had two hits, two RBIs and two runs scored in a 10-8 win over Clarence Black. Louie Destino struck out five in three innings of relief to get the win. In game two, Lewiston knocked off the Tonawanda Stars 11-6 behind three hits and two runs scored from Dragone. Nathan Waterstram, Smiley Nichols and Destino each added two hits. In the final game of pool play, Lewiston fell to Cayuga 11-5 despite two hits from both Destino and Dragone. Michael Tamul drove in two runs and made several solid defensive plays. In the semifinals, Destino and Waterstram combined on a three-hitter but it wasn’t enough as Grand Island topped Lewiston 2-1. For the tournament, Destino allowed only one run and struck out 13 batters in nine innings of work.

Hyde Park Minors

William Gilbert and Quran Dubois combined on a two-hitter with 13 strikeouts as the VFW Post No. 917 Men’s Auxiliary Braves beat the Cardamone Chiropractic Dodgers 9-3. Dubois also had three hits at the dish, while Cameron Abel had two hits and two RBIs, John Blevins ripped a solo home run, Jackson Krebs added two hits and Anthony Sullivan had an RBI single. For the Dodgers, Elin Bianco and Zaki Gregory had the lone hits.

SOFTBALL

16U Travel

The Wheatfield Hurricanes swept a Metro League doubleheader from the Grand Island Vikings on Monday. In the opener, Kelly Bourque got the win in the circle with six strikeouts as the Wheatfield beat Grand Island 11-1. Bourque, Angela Elliott (Niagara-Wheatfield) and Krista Longo (Starpoint) all finished with three RBIs and two runs scored. Elise Jancef (Wilson), Lauren Devantier, Katie Jones and Jenn Martin added three hits apiece. Cari Sumner and Katie Sobieski each had a double for GI.

In the nightcap, the Hurricanes scored six runs in the sixth innings to top GI 6-5. Jenn Martin, Brittany Mazierski (Niagara-Wheatfield), Ally Neff and Katie Jones each had two hits, while Elliott and Devantier scored twice. Jancef knocked in the winning run after pitching five strong innings. Bourque tossed the final two frames to get the win. Zarianna Peterson made three outstanding defensive plays in the outfield to preserve the win for Wheatfield (10-3). Sumner and Sarah Osberg had two hits and a run scored for the Vikings, who also got a strong pitching performance from Mandy Tilkins.

• The Cayuga Gamblers Silver knocked off the Lou Gehrig Lasers 8-7 in the quarterfinals of the Niagara Frontier League’s Gold division. Cayuga scored five runs in the bottom of the seventh, capped off by Victoria Ely coming around to score the winning run on an RBI single off the bat of Caitlin Kirbis (North Tonawanda). Megan Golden (Niagara Falls) also had a two-run single and Allie Gibson (North Tonawanda) followed that up with a clutch double to the base of the right field wall. Gibson also got the win in the circle. Shaina Bunker (North Tonawanda), Ely, Golden, Gibson and Kirbis each had two hits.

VOLLEYBALL

NYM Co-Ed League

Ryan Edwards had 10 kills, four blocks and eight service points to lead Jim’s Team to an 11-0, 10-11, 11-4, 11-7 win over The Crew. Jim Stypa added 10 service points and eight kills. In the loss, Kevin Ormsby had seven service points.

• Matt Thompson recorded 10 service points, seven kills and three aces as Team Matt beat Valery Contracting 11-7, 11-7, 11-4. Jose Fernandez added eight service points, four kills, four blocks and four aces, while Eladio Garcia had seven service points, three blocks and five aces. For Valery, Sam Falcetti had 10 service points, including three aces.

• Missy McGovern had six service points, including four aces, as Pizella’s Pizza beat Six Pack 11-2, 11-2, 11-7. Mike Grabek added five service points, including three aces, and a pair of blocks. Emily Bird had five service points and nine blocks and Annie Burns added six blocks and five aces for Six Pack.

• Ben Neubauer had 15 service points, including 10 aces, as Ben’s Beach Bums beat Kayla’s 5-11, 11-3, 11-5, 11-3. A.J. Gelose added 18 service points, including 12 aces, and a pair of kills. For Kayla’s, Rob Wilson had 14 service points (eight aces), two kills and two blocks. Kayla DiPronio added 11 service points, including five kills.

• Jose Fernandez had nine service points, seven kills, five aces and three blocks as Mexico beat Casal’s Boxing Club 11-2, 11-8, 11-6. Andres Molina added five service points, six kills and four blocks. For Casal’s Maria Garcia scored nine service points, four kills and three blocks. Gabe Gonzalez added four service points, three kills and two blocks while Sabrina Certo chipped in with four aces and three kills.

• Matt Thompson had nine service points and three blocks and Heather Drubcetic added seven service points, including four aces to lead Pizella’s Pizza to a points victory over the Yankees, 43-39. Melissa McGovern added eight service points and two blocks in the win. For the Yankees, Ashley Armagost had 10 service points, including three aces, and two blocks. Brian Wilson chipped in with eight service points, three kills and four blocks.

GOLF

Hyde Park Wednesday Ladies

In full handicap medal play, Sue Farley took top honors in flight A with a 35. Bonnie Hill was second at 38 after winning a tiebreaker with Joanne McCartin, who also shot a 38. In flight B, Sue Nutt was first with a 36, Nancy Linton shot a 41 to finish second and Anne Despres was third with a 43. Sally Alex won flight C with a 31, while Ellen Dooher was second with a 37 and Gail McMahon shot a 41 to come in third. Sue Canavan won flight D with a 40, Mary Lostracco was second at 40 and Eileen Giaraffa was third with a 47.

In low putts, Hill and Carolyn King shared top honors in flight A with 15. Denise Czamara won flight B with 16, Dooher and McMahon tied at 18 in flight C and Connie Borgese won flight D with 17.

Hyde Park Friday Ladies

In weekly tournament play, Kaitlyn Locey won flight A with a 20, Gwendolyn Bradley was tops in flight B with 15 and Rosalie Ponzi won flight C with a 14. Locey also won flight A in stroke play with a 35. Carla Smyth was tops in flight B with a 37 and Ponzi took flight C with a 41. For low putts, Cathy Williams won flight A with 14, Dorothy Gatto took flight B with 14 and Sonia Steckelberg needed only 15 to win flight C.

Hyde Park Thursday Ladies

In Smokin Joe’s Tournament action on the North 18, Angela Randazzo won flight A with a 67, Steckelberg was low in flight B with a 68 and Judith Laur won flight C with a 74. In weekly play, Helen Voljak was low in flight A with a 39, King won flight B with a 40 and May Jowdy was low in flight C with a 42. For low putts, Lee Adriatico had 30 to win flight A and both Marilyn Burak and Steckelberg had 29 putts to tie for flight B’s top honors. In flight C, there was a three-way tie between Henrietta Ingham, Marie Kandy and Joan Reynolds at 33.

BOYS BASKETBALL

NC Varsity League

Lewiston-Porter remained unbeaten as it used its transition game to open up it’s long-distance shooting in a 72-47 win over Niagara-Wheatfield. Robby Seyler led the way for the Lancers (3-0) with 27 points, while James Butera and Marc Morreale combined for 29 more. Carl Graff put up 20 points for the Falcons (1-2).

• Wilson also stayed unbeaten as Ethan Baker tallied 19 points in a 61-33 win over Royalton-Hartland. Also for the Lakemen (3-0), James Dysard and John Vincent split 22 points. For the Rams (1-2), Tim Mullen had 11 points.

• Niagara Catholic (2-1) topped Newfane 53-20 as Lorenzo Joseph and Myrel Brundidge each had 12 markers in the win. Joe Robison had seven points for the Panthers (0-3).

• Jon Corbi netted nine points to lead a balanced Starpoint attack in a 36-14 win over Tonawanda. The Spartans (2-1) held THS to only four field goals. Zack Snyder led the Warriors (0-3) with seven points.

NC JV League

Starpoint remained undefeated as it knocked off Lewiston-Porter 45-37. Tyler Sieczkarek led the Spartans (3-0) with 17 points, while Alex Rankie added 14 points and Alex Rankie had 10. Aaron Stephens had 18 points to lead Lew-Port (1-2).

n Niagara-Wheatfield picked up its first win with a 42-37 victory over Wilson. Tom Stanley led a balanced N-W (1-2) attack with 14 points. Pat Walch had 22 points and Tyler Martin added 11 for the Lakemen (1-2).

• The contest between Tonawanda and Niagara Catholic was postponed.

12U Travel

In Buffalo PAL League action, the Niagara Falls Boys & Girls Club downed the Family I 39-22 behind 12 points from Darrion Jackson and 11 points from Maleik Agee.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

NFB&GC/PAL Classic

Grand Island continued its strong play as Mary Sherrer had 17 points in a 49-22 win over Niagara Falls. Susan Pioli and Danielle Wegrzyn added 10 points apiece in the win. For NFHS, Kayla Briggs had seven points and Lakea Crittenden added six.

• Lewiston-Porter topped Barker 22-10 behind seven points from Megan Cuda.

• Raeann Stillwell had 17 points and Victoria Fontana added 11 as St. Mary’s of Lancaster beat Niagara Catholic 53-23. Emily Bird had 15 for NC.

• Lea Sobieraski and Kim Harrington each had 12 points as Lockport beat Niagara-Wheatfield JV 41-14.

• In its second game of the night, Lewiston-Porter beat Buffalo Tapestry 31-21 as Kristin Ripsm had nine points. Haley Hale led Buffalo Tapestry with seven points.

• Marissa Beniszewski had nine points to lead Lancaster to a 30-23 win over Niagara-Wheatfield. Angela Hastings had five points for N-W.

MEN’S SOFTBALL

Delaware Park Seniors

Mike Meyer had three home runs and the game-winning two-run double in the bottom of the seventh inning to lead the Power Drive/Talarico Yankees to a 14-13 win over the Eldredge Club. Meyer finished with seven RBIs in the win. Also for the Yankees, Bob Yarger had three hits and Guy Muto added a pair of doubles. In the loss, Cliff Bro had a three-run homer, while both Tim Strong and John Trigilio had three hits.
