BASKETBALL: Gamble makes good impression at Eurobasket showcase

Niagara Falls native Greg Gamble was one of the top performers at last week’s Eurobasket Summer League in Chicago, according to an organizer of the showcase event for international basketball prospects.
“He will definitely make the ESL Chicago All-Tourney Team and I expect him to land in Europe,” said Darryl Reshaw, president of Trans-Atlantic Sports Marketing, in an e-mail.
The former University at Buffalo captain played both guard positions and showed off his versatile skills, Reshaw said in a follow-up phone interview.
“He showed creativity, athleticism ... he was tricky with the left hand,” Reshaw said. “Sometimes he brought the ball up the floor; sometimes he caught it on the wing and scored. He took the ball to hole, defended well, hit his jumper.”
A full report on the ESL Chicago, including the all-tournament team, will be published on www.eurobasket.com this week, Reshaw said.
Gamble had a triple-double with 17 points, 14 rebounds and 10 assists in his team’s first game, according to the Web site. Results from the rest of the games will be part of the final report.
The ESL Chicago was attended by more than 65 players and was held at the A.T.T.A.C.K. Athletics facility run by Michael Jordan’s former trainer, Tim Grover. Gamble’s former Niagara Falls High School teammates, Jonny Flynn and Paul Harris, trained with Grover in preparation for last month’s NBA Draft.
Gamble is in Las Vegas this week playing in another ESL event and attending the Global Basketball Expo.
According to the ESL’s Web site, almost half of the players who participated in last year’s event landed professional contracts.
Gamble, who said before leaving for Chicago that he has yet to hire an agent, is looking to become the second graduate of the new Niagara Falls High School to play professional basketball overseas, joining Jeff Parmer, who played in Spain last season.
In his senior year at UB, Gamble averaged 8.9 points, 5.5 rebounds and 4.0 assists. His conversion to point guard — after starting 81 games on the wing in his first three seasons — was a major factor in the Bulls winning 21 games, claiming a share of the Mid-American Conference East division title, and advancing to the MAC Championship game.
