HS ROUNDUP (April 29): Caughell wins three events for Niagara-Wheatfield

Niagara-Wheatfield’s Carl Caughell was a triple individual winner Tuesday for the Niagara-Wheatfield boys track and field team, taking first in the 110 high hurdles, 400 intermediate hurdles and high jump, helping the Falcons down Kenmore East 84-57 in Niagara Frontier League action. The Falcons improved to 2-0 in league play.
Tim Metivier won the 200, 800, 1,600 and was on the winning 1,600 relay squad for East (0-2).
Ken West 96, Niagara Falls 41
Eric Norman won the 400, 110 high hurdles and was the anchor of the winning 1,600 relay quartet as the Blue Devils improved to 1-1 in the NFL. Ian Carlino won the 1,600 and 3,200, while Doug Hannon took the 400 intermediate hurdles and the triple jump for West.
Rodney Joyner won the long jump and shot put events for NFHS (0-2).
Lockport 71, NT 69
Justen Person won the long jump and triple jump to lift the Lions to the NFL win.
For NT, Adam Burns won the 200 and 400, Jared Voelker took the 110 high hurdles and 400 intermediate hurdles and Mark Tate won the shot put and discus.
Starpoint 85, Amherst 56
Sam Mattina won the long jump and 110 high hurdles to lift the Spartans to the ECIC II win. Zach Ahart won the 1,600 and was on the winning 3,200 relay squad for Starpoint (1-1 ECIC II).
Byron Hall won the high jump and triple jump for the Tigers (0-1).
Wilson 71, Medina 70
Don Truesdell won both the 800 and 1,600 to lead the Wilson boys squad, which is 1-1 in the Niagara-Orleans League. Truesdell also joined Tony Kaminska, Mike Reubens and Alex Brennan to win the 3,200 relay.
Girls Track
Ken East 73, N-Wheatfield 68
Sarah Kosloski won the 1,500 and 3,000 and ran the final leg of the 3,200 relay to lift the Bulldogs (1-1 NFL) to their first Niagara Frontier League win of the season.
Jamie Popp won the 100 and 200 and was on the winning 400 relay for the Falcons (1-1).
Ken West 71, Niagara Falls 69
Jenna Panepinto won the 400 intermediate hurdles and long jump and was on the winning 1,600 and 3,200 relay quartets to give the Blue Devils the NFL win. Lexi Panepinto took the long jump and 800 and was also on the winning 3,200 relay team for West (1-1 NFL).
For the Falls (0-2), Bashiyra Doss won the 400 and 200 and Brianna Jones took both the discus and shot put.
NT 77, Lockport 64
Staci Czaja won the 100 and 200, Jackie Burns took the 400 and 800 and Kayleigh Bemisderfer took the 400 intermediate hurdles and long jump for the Lady Jacks in the NFL win.
Erin Miller won both the shot put and discus for LHS.
Starpoint 92, Amherst 49
Victoria Jaynes won the long jump, triple jump and pole vault to lead the Lady Spartans to the ECIC II win. Katie Baglio won both the shot put and discus, while Ashley Boyce took both of the hurdle events for Starpoint (2-0 ECIC II).
Brenna Symoniak won the 1,500 and 3,000 for Amherst (0-1).
Medina 83, Wilson 54
Medina won 11 of 17 events to improve to 3-0 in the Niagara-Orleans League. Kari Kopchick doubled in the 100 and 400 hurdles for Wilson, which is 0-2.
Baseball
N-Wheatfield 8, NT 1
Carl Graff threw a complete game, allowing only four hits and striking out 11 batters to lift the Falcons to the Niagara Frontier League win. Chris Gruarin had a two-run double, Matt Attfield had a two-run single and Bryan MacSwan scored three times for N-W (4-5 overall, 2-2 NFL).
Micah Puscheck scored the lone run for NT (4-4, 2-2).
Starpoint 6, Cheek. 5 (8 inns.)
Kevin Hughes doubled in Jon Corbi in the bottom of the eighth inning to give the Spartans an ECIC III win. Andy Boyce, who was 2-for-3 at the plate, tossed the final three innings in relief to get the win. Also for Starpoint (4-7 overall, 2-3 ECIC III), Hughes finished with two hits and two RBIs and Joe Delelio and Matt Ruppert each had a hit and a run scored.
Jordan Cave hit a two-run homer for the Warriors (1-4 ECIC III).
Tonawanda 8, Depew 5
Scott Foster picked up the win in relief for the host Warriors at Vets Park in ECIC III play. Foster also went 1-for-2 with three runs scored and an RBI for Tonawanda (3-6 overall, 3-2 ECIC III). Mike Tolsma was 2-for-4 with a run scored, Scott McGregor went 2-for-3 with an RBI and Jesse Zellner finished 1-for-3 with two RBIs in the win.
Medina 5, Akron 4
Andrew Misiti went the distance on the mound for Medina in Niagara-Orleans League action scattering five hits with nine strikeouts including big strikeouts to end both the sixth and seventh innings. Connor Hartigan had the game-winning double for Medina (3-1 N-O). Akron fell to 2-2 in the league.
Albion 14, Barker 3
Breaking away from an early 2-2 tie, Albion took charge by erupting for eight runs in the second inning aided by a rash of walks and highlighted by RBI singles by Mark Armstrong and Justin Ward. Armstrong had a total of three hits on the day and Ward drove in a total of four runs for the Purple Eagles (4-0 N-O).
Tony Sonberg and Jason Hinton each had two hits for Barker (2-2).
Roy-Hart 19, CSAT 5
The trio of Ryan Schwab, Matt Heschke and Billy Costello combined to hurl a two-hitter for Roy-Hart in N-O action. Schwab had four strikeouts in three innings, Heschke five in three and Costello two in the final frame. Matt Kuhn had three hits for the Rams (1-3 N-O). CSAT fell to 0-4.
Junior Varsity
- Dave MacSwan had the game-winning RBI with two outs in the bottom of the seventh to give Niagara-Wheatfield a 7-6 win over NT. Nick Lotempio had three hits for N-W (3-1), while Josh Kern led NT with three hits.
Softball
Ken East 9, Lew-Port 4
Winning pitcher Sam Broas struck out five batters and plated two runs offensively as the Bulldogs improved to 3-1 in the Niagara Frontier League. Jordyn Broas, Joelle Pollak and Jaclyn Vellanti also had two RBIs for Ken East (4-4 overall).
Katherine Petrozzi had a home run for Lew-Port (3-7, 1-3).
Boys Lacrosse
NT 10, Jamestown 4
Eric Huk had three goals and two assists to give the Lumberjacks their first Class A win in school history. Tom Bemisderfer added two goals and two assists for NT (2-4 overall, 1-3 Class A).
Defender Jeff Zellner scored his first career goal, while Cory Stuff added a team-high seven ground balls and Aaron Roy made 15 saves in net.
Williamsville East 11, Grand Island 2
Derek Frost had three goals and two assists, while Michael Faltisco had two goals and an assist to lead visiting Williamsville East to the Class B win.
Joe Fischer and Drew Lazelle scored for Grand Island (3-3 overall, 1-2 Class B).
Gowanda 9, Wilson 7
In Class C play, Kyle Lacey and Erick Rudolph each had hat tricks to lead Wilson in a losing effort. Mike Taylor also scored for the Lakemen (2-6 overall, 2-5 Class C).
No information was submitted for Gowanda.
Boys Tennis
Ken West 2, Lockport 1 (susp.)
The host Blue Devils lead the Niagara Frontier League match, which was suspended due to rain. Andre Pozantidis won at first singles for the Blue Devils, who remain at 6-0. Jackson Kocak and Jim Abbott won at doubles for Ken West.
Lockport’s second doubles team of Andrew Granchelli and Alex Schwartz earned a win for the Lions (5-1).
Canisius 5, Niagara Catholic 0
The visiting Crusaders picked up the Monsignor Martin win at Niagara University, as Peter Roehmholdt, Matt Gura and Chris Franjoine all won at singles.
Niagara Catholic dropped to 1-5 this season as Mike Richbart lost his first match of the year.
