HS ROUNDUP (Jan. 7): GI wrestlers nip NFHS
Staff reports
Lee Schuster’s late pin of Nick Fiocco at 119 pounds lifted Grand Island past Niagara Falls 33-32 in a key Niagara Frontier League wrestling match Wednesday. Also picking up pins for GI (2-1 NFL) were T.J. Acker (103), Zach Wojnar (112) and Joe Giambelluca (125).
The Falls (6-4, 1-2) got pins from Jimmy Scott (130) and Sjuhr Dennis (171). Irvin Buck (140) won by technical fall.
N-W 54, Lew-Port 15
Joe Malvestuto (119) and Bob Limina (160) won by pin for the Falcons, who also benefitted from six forfeits in the NFL win. N-W improved to 3-0. Jason Kromer (103) and Dan Reagan (112) picked up pins for Lew-Port (0-3).
Ken West 45, NT 18
The Blue Devils improved to 3-0 in the NFL thanks in large part to pins by Ron Dugay (103), Matt Orleman (152) and Steve Kuzara (215). For NT (0-3), Wally Maziarz (130) was a winner by pin.
Wilson 54, Medina 27
The host Lakemen picked up their first Niagara-Orleans League win of the season, getting pins from Chase Wheeler (96), Isaiah Barrett (103), Cody Kaminska (119), Mitch Thrush (125), Jordan Gelnett (140), Mike Taylor (145), Brandon Culverwell (171), Austin Fisher (189) and Jake Cooley (215). Wilson improved to 1-2. The Mustangs (1-2) got pins from C.G. Ambrose (130), Evan Wells (135) and Dylan Duncanlson (160).
Junior Varsity
• N-W beat Lew-Port by a 41-27 count.
Boys Basketball
Tonawanda 63, Park 28
Sophomore Kyle Schroeder led 11 Tonawanda scorers with 17 points as the visiting Warriors picked up the non-league win. Also for Tonawanda (2-5 overall), Mike Carson had seven points and 13 rebounds. Heewan Yang led Park with 15 points.
O’Hara 55, Holland 47
Brendan Brady had 13 points and 14 rebounds as the Hawks picked up a non-league road win. Reggie Martin led O’Hara (2-8 overall) with 18 points, while Andy Tate added 13. D.J. Better had nine points for the Dutchmen (4-5).
Junior Varsity
• Jakai Daniels had 20 points and Sam Cumbo added 11 as Ken East beat N-W 56-49. John Ayers and Aaron Gilbert each had 15 for N-W.
