Until the University at Buffalo and a couple of its corporate sponsors stepped up Thursday, the 1958 UB football was going to receive more television coverage this weekend than the current one.
Time Warner Cable channel 13 will air the Bulls quest to qualify for the Mid-American Conference championship game — and likely lock up a bowl bid — tonight at Bowling Green.
“We appreciate the support of both the University and key corporate sponsors New Era and AD PRO Sports in helping us bring this game home to our fans,” said Warde Manuel, university athletics director, in a news release.
The game, which starts at 6 p.m., is being produced for the Bowling Green market by Buckeye Cable Sports Network.
UB (6-4 overall, 4-3 MAC) leads Bowling Green (5-5, 3-3) by a game in the East division standings. If the Bulls can earn their first ever win at Doyt L. Per Stadium, they will have the division title wrapped up before next week’s regular season finale at home against Kent State.
That will put them in the Dec. 5 conference championship game at Ford Field in Detroit, where they’ll likely meet undefeated Ball State.
The seven wins should be enough for UB to get invited to a postseason bowl game for the first time since the ’58 squad declined to play in the Tangerine Bowl due to the stadium’s segregationist policies at the time.

Wrestling

Moran ranked nationally
Mickey Moran was listed among the top 20 184-pound wrestlers in two national reports this week. Rev Wrestling ranked the UB senior at No. 19, while the USA Today/InterMat/NWCA list had him at No. 20.
Moran is currently 9-1 overall, and 4-1 in dual meets. His lone loss was against Duke’s John Barone, who is rated 19th by InterMat. The Bulls are in Ithaca for Saturday’s Body Bar Invitational, which will include ranked programs Boise State, Kent State and Cornell.

Swimming

GI’s Kaplan wins
Josh Kaplan (Grand Island) won the 200 yard backstroke and helped the 400 medley relay team to victory as Geneseo topped Cortland to improve to 3-0.
