HS ROUNDUP (Oct. 5): Ken East Bulldogs get in the win column

Staff Reports

Mike Doherty was all over the field Saturday in leading the Kenmore East Bulldogs to their first win of the season. Doherty, a senior, carried the ball 23 time for 135 yards and two scores and added six catches for 96 yards as East downed host Williamsville East 21-14 in Class A North action.

“It’s about time,” Ken East coach Matt Chimera said with a chuckle. “It was just a matter of getting over the hump and I think we did that with a good start to the second half.”

The Bulldogs (1-4 overall, 1-3 Class A North) scored twice in the third quarter, first on a 33-yard run from Doherty and then on a 13-yard hook-up between Jon Anthony Wiltberger and Kevin Wagner. Wiltberger finished the day 12-of-21 for 162 yards and a TD.

The Flames fell to 0-4 in the division.

Sweet Home 42, Starpoint 14

Casey Kacz threw for two touchdowns and ran for another as the Panthers jumped out to a big lead en route to a Class A North victory. Deshenaro Morris added a pair of rushing TDs for the Panthers (5-0 overall, 4-0 Class A North).

Despite the lopsided nature of the score, Starpoint defensive coordinator Tim Racey said the difference in total yardage was only about 100 but that turnovers were the Spartans’ downfall. Starpoint quarterback Joe Scibilia was 6-of-16 for 83 yards and two touchdowns, but all-league running back Brandon Bratek was held in check, running for only 47 yards on 10 carries. Joe Delelio had three catches for 42 yards and a TD and Denver Kopp, who led the team with 11 tackles, hauled in a six-yard TD pass in the fourth quarter for Starpoint (2-3, 2-2).

V-Kearney 48, O’Hara 12

The visiting Hawks rushed for more than 220 yards, but were done in by six turnovers in the non-league loss. Shaquille Dudley rushed nine times for 97 yards, while Rob Davis rushed 14 times for 87 yards. Dudley connected on an 8-yard scoring pass to Klyde Bynum in the fourth quarter for the Hawks (2-3). Freshman Anthony Tate led O’Hara with seven tackles.

“It was not a pretty game,” O’Hara coach Angelo Sciandra said. “We moved the ball at times. We weren’t bad as a run defense, but they hit some big passes against us.”

Junior quarterback Jake Meek threw for a school-record 325 yards and three touchdowns on 10-of-15 passing to lead the Kings (3-2). Bishop Kearney junior wide receiver Blair Roberts had a school-record 249 yards receiving and three touchdowns on seven receptions.

Pembroke 48, Barker 6

Andrew Wright, Josh Phillips and Mike Dibble each had two touchdowns as the Dragons picked up the Section V Genesee Region League win to improve to 5-0 on the year. Greg Brown, who ran 22 time for 70 yards, scored the lone TD for the Raiders (1-4). Josh Dubois added three catches for 34 yards and an interception on defense. Cody Blackley chipped in with 13 tackles and Ray Paul had eight stops, including a sack.
