A year after being upset by Williamsville East, the Grand Island Vikings were out to make sure a similar result didn’t happen Saturday afternoon at Masters Field. GI (3-1 overall, 2-1 Class A North) scored all of its points in the opening half en route to a 47-0 Class A North thrashing of the visiting Flames (1-3, 0-3).
“We were looking forward to a good ballgame, but we got out to a real quick start and the kids began to play with a lot of confidence after that,” GI coach Dean Santorio said. “We did a great job of executing on both sides of the ball.”
Senior wide receiver Alex Neutz caught three first-quarter touchdown passes and finished with four catches for 137 yards. Joe Oliverio was 4-of-6 for 97 yards and two TDs, while Klock went 2-of-3 for 44 yards and a TD.
On the ground, Eddie Weiser ran it 10 times for 147 yards and two TDs. Andy LaLonde added five carries for 49 yards and a TD. Defensively, Adam Helman had six tackles and a sack. The Vikings defense allowed only one first down in the first two quarters.
Albion 40, Newfane 6
Big special teams and defensive plays set up the first three touchdowns sparking the visiting Purple Eagles over Newfane in Class B North action. A pass interception and a 30-yard punt return by Matt Monacelli and a blocked punt by Joe Blair set up three touchdowns by Matt Gilbert on runs of 12, 2 and 15 yards powering Albion (3-1 overall, 3-0 Class B North) out to an 18-0 lead midway through the second quarter.
The Purple Eagles lead ballooned to 26-0 at the half as quarterback Ronnie Mannella hooked up with Nick Theodorakos for a 28-yard touchdown pass with 2:14 to go. The Purple Eagles added two touchdowns in the fourth quarter on a 28-yard Mannella to Shane Woolston pass and a 4-yard run by Ben Thornton. Gilbert added both extra point kicks.
Newfane’s touchdown came on a 17-yard pass from quarterback Rob Slocum to Matt Sternin in the third quarter. An interception by Brandon Seib set up the opportunity for the Panthers (0-4 overall, 0-4 B North).
Attica 44, Barker 27
Barker senior Greg Brown scored the first two touchdowns of the game, but the Raiders couldn’t hold on in Section V Genesee-Region League play.
“It was a very competitive game until thing got away from us a little bit in the second half,” Barker coach Bill Bruning said. “We played very well, though.”
Brown finished with 25 carries for 110 yards and a score. Defensively he had seven tackles and returned an interception for a TD. Ray Paul added eight carries for 30 yards and a TD catch of 45 yards from Ethan Dewart. Anthony Porter, who led the team with 12 tackles, had a 30-yard TD run in the fourth quarter. Also for Barker (1-3 overall, 1-3 G-R), Paul, Jake Greenwald and Austin Snyder each had eight stops.
Andy Ruddock rushed for three touchdowns and Luke Pariso added two TDs on the ground for Attica (3-1).
Aquinas 43, St. Joe’s 14
Matt Rosenhahn and Nick Hall each threw a touchdown pass, but the Marauders fell in a non-league road game against one of the state’s best teams. Rosenhahn finished 10-of-14 for 83 yards and added 11 carries for 63 yards. Hall was 3-of-4 for 89 yards through the air. Also for St. Joe’s (1-3 overall), Mark Emerson had five receptions for 117 yards and two TDs, Tunde Babarinsa ran for 57 yards on 12 carries and Jeff Moore led the defense with 10 tackles.

In race No. 4 of the boys division, Barker finished fourth out of 37 teams led by freshman Tyler Scheving’s 15th-place finish. He finished in a time of 16:45. Rounding out the Raiders’ top five were Shawn Thompson (25th), Erick Bennes (35th), Mike Lantinen (37th) and Ryan Lamb (58th).
In race No. 6, Wilson came in 23rd largely due to the efforts of Kevin Hanes, who finished fourth overall in a time of 16:15. Rounding out Wilson’s top five were Mike Reubens (40th), Ben Truesdell (155th), Liam Bull (193rd) and Kyle Hanes (210th).
In race No. 16, the Lewiston-Porter boys were led by Andrew Krause, who came in 96th place after posting a time of 18:14. Rounding out the Lancers’ top five were Joe Melcher (122nd), Craig Plante (145th), Ryan Dallavia (180th) and Kevin Foley (181st).
On the girls side in race No. 2, Barker came in eighth out of 21 teams as Deanna Platt came in 18th overall after finishing the course in 20:35. Rounding out the top three for the Lady Raiders were Jamie Przybyl (45th) and Amber Sweeney (49th).
In race No. 5, Amber Lehman finished in 41st place to help Wilson to a 10th-place finish out of 35 teams. Rounding out the top five for the Lakewomen were Kari Kopchick (53rd), Bridgette Austin (86th), Stephanie Patuano (95th) and Alaina Kopchick (130th).
In race No. 19, Jennifer Raby finished 40th to pace Lewiston-Porter. Rounding out the top three for Lew-Port were Caitlin Wright (82nd) and Caitlin Drennan (131st).
Junior Varsity
- Jed Platt, David Poyfair and Derek Fuerch were in the top 75 for Barker, which finished 13th as a team.
Boys Soccer
V-Honeoye 7, Tonawanda 1
At Tonawanda High School, the Warriors trailed 2-0 at the halftime and fell in the non-league contest. Dylan Jobson had a pair of goals for Honeoye (9-1-1 overall). Stephen Linderman had the goal for Tonawanda (1-8). Chris Vanderbrook played an outstanding two-way game, according to coach Al Zarcone.
Roy-Hart 3, WSC 0
Brent Russell, Mike Slattery and Brendan Conley scored and goalkeeper Shawn Slattery made 12 saves to earn the shutout for the Rams (2-9 overall) in a non-league win over West Seneca Christian.
Junior Varsity
- Brian Hardwick and Chris Fitzgerald scored for THS in a 2-2 tie with Honeoye.
Girls Soccer
Newfane 6, CCA 2
Gabby Balseca scored three goals and added two assists for the visiting Lady Panthers in a non-league win. Alexis Moreland added two goals for Newfane and Kayla Williams also scored. Records for both teams were not provided.
Lyndonville 3, Barker 0
Keeper Sara Sullivan made more than 20 saves for the Lady Raiders (0-8-1 overall) in the non-league loss. No additional information was available.
Mount St. Mary 6, Kenmore East 1
Bre Catipovic had a hat trick and Samantha Rizzo added a pair of goals as the Thunder picked up the non-league win.
Junior Varsity
- Marissa Estep scored and Rebecca Cooner earned the shutout for Barker in a 1-0 win over Lyndonville.
Girls Volleyball
Alden 3, Tonawanda 0
Danyella Azzarelli, Kaitlyn Martin and Rebecca Warthling played well, but the Warriors fell in ECIC IV action, 25-13, 25-15, 25-16. THS falls to 1-9 overall. No additional information was provided.
