COLLEGE ROUNDUP: A-Rob will miss first 3 UB hoops games

Staff Report

Andy Robinson will have to sit out the University at Buffalo’s first three regular season men’s basketball games, as punishment for violating university policy regarding academic integrity, coach Reggie Witherspoon announced Friday.

Robinson, a senior shooting guard who led the team in scoring last season, was suspended indefinitely in April after he admitted to soliciting another student to complete a written assignment.

He was initially barred from offseason workouts, but has since been allowed to practice with the team, as the Bulls prepare to play three exhibitions and a scrimmage in Canada over Labor Day weekend.

“He is back practicing with the team after serving a suspension in the spring,” Witherspoon said in a statement e-mailed to the media. “He has done everything asked of him from the university, division of athletics and men’s basketball program to atone for his actions and has learned and grown from his mistake. Andy had a successful summer session in the classroom and we look forward to a succesful senior season on the court.”

The Bulls haven’t yet released their non-conference schedule.

Robinson was the only player with a double-digit scoring average (13.1) for the 10-20 Bulls last season. His 16.3-point effort in conference games was buoyed by a 35-point night at Northern Illinois.

The offending Facebook post was discovered by another UB student who alerted The Spectrum, UB’s student-run newspaper.

Robinson apologized in April, saying, “I take full responsibility and realize I must regain the trust of my teammates, fellow student athletes and coaching staff.”

Mag awards UB

The Bulls were named Best College Sports Team by Buffalo Spree magazine. Coach Kathy Twist’s squad won the Mid-American Conference championship in the spring, becoming the first UB team to qualify for an NCAA Division I championship tournament.

This is the second year Buffalo Spree has given out such an award. Last year, the magazine honored Niagara University’s men’s basketball team.
