INSIDE RACING: Big night out at the Big R
By Nate Beutel E-mail Nate
If you were ever planning to head out to Ransomville Speedway, tonight is the night. Not only is the fan-favorite Alex Friesen Nationals on tap, but IndyCar driver P.J. Chesson is scheduled to compete in the New York Modified Midgets race at the Big R.
The former World of Outlaws driver is known for his aggressive driving style, which is always endearing to fans — just look at Tony Stewart. He last drove in the IRL in 2007, but there have been numerous rumors of his return to the series in the near future.
The Summer Nationals will also welcome in a few legends in Stewart Friesen and “The Doctor” Danny Johnson. They’ll join regulars Todd Burley, Pete Bicknell and Jeff McGinnis in the DIRTcar 358 Modified Series event. The winner will be paid approximately $6,800 according to a release.
In addition, streetsocks will be in action and a fireworks display will conclude the jam-packed card. Gates open at 4 p.m. with time trials set for 7 p.m.
DTR to celebrate 50 years
Dunn Tire Raceway Park has a pair of special events planned for the coming weeks to help mark its 50th anniversary in Lancaster.
On Aug. 9, racing action will begin at 4 p.m. as opposed to the usual 6:30 p.m. start time to accommodate the large volume of races. The Race of Champions Asphalt Modified Tour will have a 100-lap main event, streetstocks will host the 50-lap Linda Tasca Memorial race, SST Sportsman also have a 50-lap feature and superstocks will race a 25-lap feature. Following the races, drivers, fans and sponsors are invited to take part in a post-race party, featuring live entertainment.
Then on Aug. 16, the annual Hero’s Homecoming is slated to reunite former drivers, officials and others that helped craft the speedway’s history. The reunion will take place from 1 to 4 p.m. Former drivers and a guest will be admitted free while fans will receive half-price admission.
Locals excel at Holland
A number of local drivers faired well at Holland Motorsports Complex recently. In the Cup Lite Series’ Debbie Graff Memorial 60-lap feature, Lockport’s Bobby Holmes passed Jeff Moorehouse of Amherst on the final lap for the win. Nelson Rung of North Tonawanda was fifth in the race. In the 40-lap pro modified race Andy Jankowiak of Tonawanda was third and Kenmore’s Mike Ticco was second in the 15-lap late model race.
Quick thought on NASCAR
Just a quick glance at the Sprint Cup standings with six races remaining before the Chase begins and I’ve got a name that I like to see steadily moving up the charts — David Ragan. The second-year driver sits 14th, only about 50 points out of the 12th and final position. Ragan is maybe best known for replacing Mark Martin in the No. 6, but if he can continue to improve, like I believe he will, he’ll become better known as one of the best young drivers on the circuit.
